They’re taxed on profits already and there is an existing windfall tax in place. We need to be self sufficient in gas production not taxed to extinction. The energy market consultancy Cornwall Insight calculates more than £40bn of the estimated £100bn of the proposed energy price cap could be swallowed up in excess profits. Senior officials have had a series of meetings with firms to discuss how contracts might be changed to prevent this from happening. The energy companies concerned, mostly renewable and nuclear businesses, have agreed at least in principle to accept new long-term contracts at fixed prices well below current rates. Why? They say it's because they recognise their vast profits aren't justified during a national crisis. But they will also be aware that spending billions of pounds of taxpayers' money on private profits isn't politically sustainable forever. -------------- When defending a position that even the energy execs are struggling to defend it's probably time to have a rethink.

When they're making estimated (unexpected) profits of £170bn while consumers are seeing their bills go up by to record levels, businesses are being quoted 500%+ rises, having to lose staff or close entirely, then those profits are inappropriate and need to be taxed. But even then I don't trust this government to spend it wisely given their reprehensible waste during the pandemic and their knack of appointing charlatans to important roles. So I'm happy to let Truss fail so that when Labour get it in can be spent appropriately.
Facecloth Posted 8 September 2022 Share Posted 8 September 2022 So Truss is planning to help reduce energy bills by removing the Green Energy Levy. Can't be a good thing surely @leicsmac?

Yet another gesture, like fracking, designed to appease the present by screwing over the future, entirely unnecessarily.

Greg2607 Posted 8 September 2022 Share Posted 8 September 2022 I've just been watching the debate and the whole place just emptied out. I think we might be witnessing the falling of London Bridge i'm afraid. for the leaders and front benches of the parties to empty out, in the middle of a debate of this magnitude, means something serious is happening. It happens every time. As soon as the leaders are done talking and the Scottish bloke starts there's an exodus.
