The I cant believe it’s not politics thread.

What is interesting is the reaction to this and the speed of information shows just how hard it is to be in effective opposition. Obviously Starmer and co will have their opportunity to voice their opposition to this budget, but by the time they do it's already out in the ether. Apart from it already been mostly leaked so the MSM can already have their articles ready to go, so can any other political commentator. Before Rachel Reeves stood up to dismantle this madness, the tweets and posts we're flying, everyone everywhere was saying the same thing. People read about it in their little bubble and unless the opposition say something absolutely brilliant, totally ridiculous or deliver a "sick burn", it's just not going to cut through people's bubbles.

This is where BoJo succeeded with his clown prince character. It didn't really matter what he said how he said it cut through into people's consciousness.

Honestly it looks like rather than a case of BoJo being forced out by Tories worried of an electoral defeat, those who actually wield power have already conceded the next general election and are attempting to cash out.

It does read like that unfortunately. And that the Tories don’t have any real intention to fix things and are just now set on making Labour do unpopular things when they take office. (Something that Labour themselves are not entirely innocent of from back in the day but that’s certainly no excuse.)

I’m not against the whole “making the rich richer” idea if it makes all of us richer, but the slump in the pound should be ringing alarms regarding what the experts really think of all this.

The drop in sterling alone will make imports more expensive (like fuel) than the tax cuts they’ve announced. and those imports will be more expensive for the six months before the tax cuts come into effect!

infact, the govt are subsidising energy (presumably sold in either euros or dollars on the wholesale market) at a cost of £10bn per month.  today alone that has gone up by £400m per month and over the past week as the markets anticipated todays sh1tshow you can double that.

so when he stood there and said the energy support scheme would cost £60bn over six months this, his data is out of date and it’s closer to £66bn

Are they playing the long game and forfeiting the next general election as they know they'll struggle?

Spend two years making changes to benefit their wealthy friends

Increase national debt and reduce the spending power of the government

Lose the election in 18 months

Whoever gets in has no choice but to raise taxes as there are is no money for public services

Tories come to the nations rescue in 2028 promising to reduce taxes

And repeat

Sadly thought the same thing earlier. No matter what political allegiances MPs have, the country interests should always trump the party interests.

Hoyle bollocked Truss in her first day in office for not making the energy statement available to MPs before journalists, which they did again today. New tactic to blindside the opposition into reacting in real time and they get off with a less detailed riposte.

So the first round of bankers bonuses will go to those who bet against the pound based on the expectations for today's announcements...

The great thing about bankers bonuses is they are taxed at a higher rate than the profits they are paid from.  Still strange politics.

While I’ve never seen the need for the top rate of tax, it just encourages schemes to reduce tax, it’s a strange choice.

Of course, none of the top earners would dream of employing tax reduction schemes at 40% and would obviously happily pay the full 40% of their earnings to the government, but as soon as they try and tax 45% well that's just not fair and they should rightly employ all "legal" means to reduce tax.

It's a complete disaster but people in South Leicestershire will still vote in Costa in 2 years time.  It's a depressing thought.  :(

Bridgen will get re-elected in NWL as well. The man is as Teflon as Vaz.

I don’t know where to begin on what they have done today. Aside from the tax cuts etc. they have just thrown the pound under the bus.

We import an awful lot in this country from the far east and an awful lot of that trade is in US$. That’s done because the $ is seen as a relatively stable currency, The £ looks like a busted flush at the minute. The value of pensions are going to plummet, costs and prices are going to increase further. The NI and basic rate tax cuts aren’t going to come close to cover it. We are going to take a hammering.

I can’t even begin to understand what kind of economic advisors thought this was sound policy. It really is fag packet economics of the very worst kind.

The working poor in society are ****ed. As are those within the care system. Disregarded and discounted as unimportant and unworthy.

When is this so called growth supposed to kick in to make the vast majority more secure and feel better off. In meantime the rich are going to have a beano. What about public services in all this.

She knows they're gone at the next GE. Her party know they're gone at the next GE. Unfortunately it's a free for all between now and then. You have to hand it to them, they can always achieve new depths of cuntery, even we think it's not possible to go any lower.

Fine if you believe that, but I’m not sure which bit of spending billions on a 1pp tax cut for 32million people, subsidised energy for all and rolling back the NI increase makes you think that.

If Apu was anyone offering a counterpoint to slagging Rodgers off, and the guy with gun was pretty much anyone on the forum then this could go into the Leicester City section.

Guess that’s the guy at the back would be the financial welfare of the club in this alternate use
