Fofana moved too soon, and I'm not just saying that as because he left the team I support. He has all the attributes at his young age to be one of the best centre backs in the world in a few years, but he has stuff to learn. At a club like Leicester he'd get that opportunity, he'd get away with a few errors. At Chelsea he's under the microscope and every mistake is magnified, the fans are quickly on a players back especially if its a player signed for big money. Also there is always someone to come in and replace him. He won't get the chance to learn on the pitch and it could potentially stunt his progression as a player if he's getting less game time.

Absolutely spot on. These young players have bad advisors/agents and this combined with a player's character can make things worse for them. Unfortunately it's all about money. What's more bizarre is that these young players earn already so much money you would think their career decisions would be wiser. I understand there's ambition involved though.

It's indicative of todays 'i want it now' society, kids only 20 & if he nevers kicks a ball for Chelsea again he's contracted up till 2027 on £200k pw & could retire easily at the age of 25
SAF had the right idea as depicted in The Class of 92 but just can't do that in this day & age there would be very few willing to put in the hardyards for gain anymore, just because they don't have to.

Well that's the problem isn't it, too much money. In a way if there's not a salary cap across the board there probably could do with one for players under a certain age. If one club, like Man Utd for example were to refuse to pay young players a certain wage until they have achieved certain targets, another club like Chelsea will happily take the risk just to get the potential future star on their books. They won't care if they don't actually play, it worth the risk to them. Then as you say, why put the hard work in when you're on a £250k a week salary at 20 for 5 years.

Like you said, salary cap is the answer. It's one thing American major sports do right and keep their leagues competitive. Closed/private leagues but still competitive.

Is the injury curse with Villa now?

Diego Carlos ruptured knee ligaments in the summer.

Boubacar Kamara now has knee ligament damage after getting injured vs Southampton.

Lucas Digne got an ankle injury against Southampton as well.

Not in our league

kamara will be out for two months and one of those will be World Cup anyway

we lose players for a year with a knee ligament issue

The different is, we'd have played Kamara to the point where he'd be out for a year :D

Yes, there are far worse-run clubs than ours.  Unfortunately, the very worst happens to be Too Big To Fail.

Manchester United posted a £115.5M net loss, biggest in their history.  Their net debt rose 20% to pass half a billion pounds.  They spent close to £100M on interest payments and increased (!) dividends to the Glazers. They borrowed in dollars and the pound has dropped.

Their wage bill also rose 20% to £384.2million, highest in the PL. It will continue to soar, as this summer’s transfer window saw United sign six first team players, totalling £229M.  “They did not expect to receive anything” from other clubs for players sold.  They spent another £25M just compensating Solskjaer and Rangnick.

That reads to me like a clown show plagued with open embezzlement.

United are arguably the worst-run major club in world football.  Sometimes a banter club on the pitch.  And yet:

The season ticket waiting list is at 135,000.  Their pre-season Asian tour drew 350,000.  First-week sales of their new kit set a record. Their hospitality and executive boxes sold out in record time and at record revenue level.  Paid memberships surpassed 275,000 globally for the first time.

The one thing MUFC has done right lately, is perfect the art of monetizing casual fans.  Ed Woodward got pilloried for saying that on-pitch achievement wasn’t meaningful to them.  How much proof do you need that he spoke true?

Clubs with tens of thousands of fans who attend matches and live and die with them, cannot compete with clubs who turn tens of millions of "fans" into money.  It’s actually an advantage that those global “fans” identify only with a brand image, so are largely indifferent to the sport.  On-pitch results?  How many could tell you the score of the last match?

Nah Dyche is well too up his own arse to be like Pearson. He's constantly talking himself up and looking for publicity imo. Big Nige is genuinely humble and introspective.

Good point....I never actually thought about it much......Dyche does seem to be doing these podcasts regularly now with his pals.

He's really clever in selling himself as a matey down to earth chap

I'd go as far to say it may never happen again, the team we were vying with for the past few years was West Ham & even they despite shelling out £355m over the past 5 seasons only peaked at 6th & now have the large squad & wage bill to match.
Previously to those 2 clubs it was Everton but again to keep the challenge up they had to over spend resulting in the situation they find themselves into today, now all 3 clubs find themselves weaker financially to dare to challenge which will happen to anyone else that goes for their 15minutes in the sun & looking and looking at the rest there doesn't seem a club big enough to give it a go anyway, all the while those 6 pull away futher & further.

There will be clubs, who will challenge & come & go, then drift away again..

Newcastle should be the next one off the block...Leeds always that enigma.

A Villa have no excuses, they should be the Midlands best hope..but atrocious club management...

IMHO,Leicester are not far off, even with Rodgers...he just has to change his system...The ideology needs a poke in the eye,the resources ARE there, the players & balance of the squad is right.

But we need to give them a new style & motivation using "their" strengths..

They really should have took Rodgers too, the dream team.

Hiring Graham Potter as Head Coach then appointing Congers as Sporting Director is like ordering a wagyu steak then smothering it with Asda's own brand ketchup.
