Kalvin Phillips off to Man City for £50m to spend half the season sat on the bench

They’re losing Fernandinho. Don’t think he’ll be on the bench as much as people reckon.

Eh its just Grealish again. I don't think anyone at Man City thinks either of them are particularly good enough to be starting there let alone to be worth 150m.

But they clearly want to shift the culture and image of the club to be one that features more England internationals.

I think there is certainly something in that. After all, it does threaten to undermine your sportswashing project a little when the general perception is that your team is full of precision-engineered robot mercenaries. I'd say they're probably two of the more popular members of the England squad over the last couple of years, Grealish particularly given they signed him not long after the Euros when most England fans went from thinking he was a diving little gimp to the most exciting and most underused player in the country.

Honestly don't think he's anything special. Will be good for him to work under Pep though

Can’t believe they have paid that for him, he is garbage. It annoys me when southgate keeps playing him

I'm not a massive Phillips fan but for £42m plus a few add ons it's a decent deal. Gets some more mobility into their midfield and obviously counts as home grown.

Man City getting £50m for Jesus supposedly. Imagine they'll be fine with effectively swapping Jesus with Phillips.

He's the next Nathan Ake, he'll play cup games and a handful of league games after European gameweeks imo.

I'm ambivalent to him. He looks OK, but only in the same way Mendy looks OK.

I guess he's popular for being Leeds and having a star wars prequel haircut

Phillips will replace Fernandinho, meaning his role will be to bring down counter attackers without having to worry about picking up any yellow cards. He'll do well I reckon.

Rodri replace Ferandinho. Phillips will sit on the bench 90% of the time  and play against Cheltenham and Fulham.

It was heavily rumoured Gundogan fancies off as well. I see Phillips as more of a replacement for him personally. Bit like Grealish they will give him a years grace and then put him in more. Their succession planning is very good - just like this Alvarez kid from River

Yes - be used in cup games and before Champions league matches,.

Probably be injured at some point as seems to pick them easily.

Good business for Leeds. Hes a grafter without that much ability. If they're smart they can get 3 or 4 players that will certainly improve their squad, if not the starting XI

Or, hopefully a couple of terrible players and they're in the relegation zone for the whole of the season 😀

Gundogan had a fantastic season the year before last but didn’t seem to play as much last year. I may be wrong. Man City are very good at exciting what they need to fit their system and requirements. Phillips is a perfect replacement for Fernandinho. I think he will suit them

more than grealish to be honest. With Harland and Alves they have pushed on again.

Mike Riley announces he will step down as the head of PGMOL after 13 years

Referees' chief Mike Riley, who led on the implementation of VAR in the Premier League, has announced he will step down next season.

Riley, 57, has headed Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for match officials in England, for 13 years.

He has faced criticism over how VAR has been used in the English top flight.

"I am proud of the contribution our match officials have made to the professional game," Riley said.

"Now is the right time to plan for the future and allow the new leadership team to build on the strong foundations that we have in place."

PGMOL have said they will confirm Riley's replacement in due course.

More than 20,000 people have signed an online petition calling for Everton to drop their new gambling sponsor.

The club announced the "record" deal with online casino stake.com two weeks ago, meaning logos will appear on men's and women's team shirts next season.

But there has been criticism from fans, with campaigners calling the move "saddening".

Everton have previously said betting sponsors are "not ideal" but needed to consider commercial decisions.

Many fans have accepted the club needed to take a different path after posting £372m in losses over the last three seasons, and it is understood there are no plans to ditch the new partnership.

But the recorded level of opposition to a sponsor is believed to be unprecedented in English football.

Norwich also ditched a gambling sponsor last season after fans protested about sexualised marketing material, while Preston North End did not renew their betting partnership after they said they took fans view into consideration.

Everton season ticket holder Ben Melvin, who has "suffered with gambling addiction for many years", said he set up the petition because he wanted to send a message to the club about what he believes are "harmful products".

Melvin, who has written to Everton, said: "The partnership does not sit right with the club's motto, the standards the club sets off the pitch and the fantastic work done by the club's Everton In The Community in tackling mental health issues.

"I didn't anticipate the petition to get to the level it has, and I realise Everton may not change their decision, but I want them to know how many people have signed it and understand how some fans feel."

A recent YouGov survey reported 1.4 million people in Britain were being harmed by gambling with a further 1.5 million at risk.

But the Premier League, the English Football League and Betting and Gaming Council all say there is no evidence to show a causal link between gambling sponsorship and problem gambling.

The government is set to decide on whether to change gambling laws, including a ban of sponsorship in football, next month.

There's a real big overhaul in officiating. Wonder if this will give us the improvement in standards that we've been wanting?

And improvements in how VAR is used ?

Webb was in the MLS and apparently the system worked better there .

Nobody cares enough about the MLS to pay off the VAR to make sure the "right" teams finish top four.
