They've looked solid in recent weeks (especially at home) and, as they don't have many players at the WC, Cooper will now have what is basically a second pre-season to create a more coherent and organised team, something he wasn't able to do in the summer with the huge number of signings. The key to managing a big club is as much about managing the egos as the tactics. Man U should have moved him on in the summer, massive mistake to keep him if you are going to put him out to pasture.
