Maybe they're "armchair fans" because they can't afford to go anymore?

Possibly. I should have clarified my comment further by indicating that I was also referring to those who support a team from afar, without any connection to the place or club. There of course may be other reasons for not watching, illness, disability and change in working pattern. Nonetheless, when you have grown adults from Plymouth supporting Manchester United, or Chelsea fans from Ipswich, it's a reflection on how many things have changed the way we support football teams. Football club's are a heritage asset to their local community and should be supported by the local community.

Our board must make the difference again and withdraw the club from all gambling companies. A statement that Leicester City games are not allowed for betting.

No thanks.

Should all alcohol be withdrawn from say, Tesco, because some people become alcoholics?

Gambling is fun when done properly.

I get the argument about excessive advertising during tv games, even about not having betting kiosks inside the ground but banning all mention of it completely just seems draconian. People have all sorts of addictions. Alcohol, food, porn, even shopping but we don't restrict everyone based on what a few people struggle to control. We don't limit the number of pints you buy in a pub, the number of fags you get at a supermarket or the amount you spend in Next, Primark or wherever.  I have a bet every week because a certain company sends me a free bet on a Friday and it's funded many takeaways. It's years since I used my own cash because I'm a tight bastard like that.

You misunderstood my post. I'm not saying that our board should withdraw the team from betting companies because of gambling addiction. Do you trust the players and their families betting? If you are, I have some stories for you from my personal basketball career...

I know all about that malarkey. My sister worked for Ladbrokes during the O'Neill era. One of her jobs was covering the player lounges and boxes. Some days she went back to the cash office with near on twenty grand in her cash bag. Hearing about of favour players betting against us was always funny.

Just put a block on advertising it around sports, full stop. If people want to gamble, they can find it but just don't allow them to advertise adjacent to sports events or to sponsor clubs.

The issue is deeper than advertising and this is the discussion. Ads are really nothing compared to what's happening in betting.

Never forget when Jim White had this poor man's Mum on the phone. He had commited suicide because of Gambling debts and they were highlighting the dangers of gambling trying to appear all righteous. The first advert after was for Paddy Power.

As long as there is money to be made they'll try and make it. They dont care about your lives.

Always feel uncomfortable at mix of Talksport and the gambling side of things they have on.

You have some decent guys now working there (including two from the Guardian podcast who were screaming blue when an ex colleague joined a rival pod which was sponsored by a bookmaker).

Just so you know everyone in Plymouth is now a Plymouth fan as they are in the papa johns trophy final… after April 2nd they will all be back to supporting any of the “BIG 6” depending on who is flavour of the month…. It’s a very rare occurrence I will see any fans from anyone outside of the so called elite teams (Plymouth aside)

Thinking ahead couple bits of news came out about pre season 23/24 which could or could not affect us.

Man City going on an Asian tour which includes a game in Thailand.

Premier League are to host a tournament in the US - six teams - Leeds, Brighton, Newcastle and Chelsea named as possibilities. Games would be in Philly, New Jersey, Atlanta

i’m sorry but you are way off.  Have you ever actually been to north America?

it’s different in many ways but people are still very passionate  about the areas they are from and the teams that represent them.

You see fan boys for superstars on the internet but that’s exactly the same as the messi and ronaldo obsessives.

Yeah, that was completely off.  Not even close.

A lot of Americans are quite strange like that. American team sport has become more about the individual than the teams itself. They are so obsessed with who the MVP is, moreso than how the team is doing as a collective. They'll follow their favourite players, like LeBron James and Tom Brady, as they jump from team to team. We've had a taste of this with the Algerians who came and went with Mahrez. You see it at Spurs with all the South Koreans in the crowd there to see Son.

Do what?

Are their fans here in the US who follow players?  Yes.
Is that the majority?  Hell no!  Not even close.

There are fair weather fans in every sport, in every country.  There are also diehards who for whatever reason, choose a team to follow, and follow that team regardless of who is on the roster.

When the Redskins played at RFK Stadium, the waitlist for a season ticket was around 20 years.  You think that’s because of who played for them?

The NY Rangers went 47 years between Stanley Cups, and their tickets at MSG were still impossible to get - and they had no superstars.

Dallas Cowboys are worth over 5billion.  Tops in the US, but haven’t won a playoff game in around 20 years.  You think they’re worth that because of who plays for them?  Nope.  It’s because they are the most recognized franchise in the US.

Im sure there are fans who went to the games during our title winning season, that haven’t watched a game in 6 years.  Does that mean you are all like that in the UK?  No

I don't get why they're allowed to advertise it anywhere.

Gambling is like smoking or drinking, we all know it exists, we don't need it to be sold to us. Literally every capable adult in the country by now knows what a bookies or a betting site is.

I accept the point that gambling is just a bit of fun for people that aren't addicted, so is drinking, or whatever else. No worries. So let them do it. But you don't need Ray Winstone or Jeff Stelling to remind you to do it, do you?

Where as every time they do, an addict is going to get an itch. Advertising is cancer anyway, the less of it the better.
