Schmeichel

Recommended Posts

Given the amount of dough he’s on it would be make perfect sense to move him on as soon as possible. Can quite easily replace him with a keeper who is as good if not better for half the money he’s on.

Love the bloke but he’s been nowhere near the level for a while now and our sentimentality over players hampers us in the long run if we bloat the squad with high wages that could be used much more efficiently elsewhere.

Did any of them win the League or FA Cup with Leicester?

On achievements alone he is our best ever and on talent he is also up there. Granted his command of the area isnt great but he wouldnt be playing for Leicester otherwise.

What a ridiculous analogy. Shilton won two European Cups, a UEFA Super Cup, the First Division Championship and the Football League Cup. Banks won the World Cup. The reason they didn't win much with Leicester was more about the manager and players surrounding them.

Schmeichel isn't in the same league as those two. Mark Wallington was also a great exponent of his craft.

Our FA Cup Final win only just over a year ago.

That was quite a while ago. He’s played over 50 games for us since then and has been below par. Doesn’t have any of the attributes needed in the modern keeper besides being a decent shot stopper. Couldn’t command a shoe box and is mediocre at best with his feet. If it’s true that he’s on 130 grand a week then I’d move him on and sign a new keeper and another position. Makes total sense given how hamstrung we are with the wage bill we’ve managed to concoct.

Selling in this window doesn't make much sense to me- potentially creates another big problem for little financial reward (we'd have to spend more than we get for him for a good enough replacement) and we're still left with all of our deadwood.

Depends. Free's up a lot of wages, and a senior slot, but it would be challenging, and more urgent departures are surely required!

Surely it makes more sense to sell Ward and keep Kasper this season with Iversen as back up.

Hopefully this happens!! But does anyone want Ward? Fee + wages would be a big investment for a keeper who has hardly player in recent years.

The best we could hope for is a loan with obligation to buy. You’d think Ward would be pushing for a move with the World Cup approaching, but maybe he’s another one who’s happy to sit on the sidelines and pick up his wages.

We also have lots of players on there final year of contracts, if they all go next year, we'll lose a lot of players and also missing out on a opportunity to sell good portion of these, lots of things to worry about, we're not in a good place atm.

Final year of contracts;

Tielemans

Vardy

Schmeichel

Mendy

Amartey

Evans

Bertrand - who cares

Choudhury

Soyuncu

Youd have to wonder why Choudhury, Perez, Vest, Bertrand, Ward aren't nearer the exit - even on loan. Later we leave it to loan em out, the more of their wages we will pay.

A lot of those type of loan signings tend not to happen until the last week or two of the transfer window. Could be bedlam this year.

You forgot Perez.

In all honesty, though, the only real money to be made on that list is from Tielemans and Cags. Vardy, Evans, and Schmeichel will probably sign extensions, and for the rest it is about shifting wages.

I could see Perez Hamza and even Lurch seeing out their contracts on loan, and possibly Mendy and Amartey too.

Squad refresh will happen next summer, whether we like it or not.

Surely we've learned by now that we leave Mendy out of a squad at our peril?

As things stand, I doubt Perez will leave this summer. We've only got him, Albrighton and Barnes as wide options, plus Maddison there when we use the 4-3-3 with all 4 of Ndidi, KDH, Youri and Maddison featuring.

If Perez leaves, it will be sooner rather than later in the window, and we will have a replacement lined up.

Testimonial's were designed to give poorly paid players of yesteryear a decent lump sum when they retired. I don't think today's players,, with massive wages & signing on fees, need help to keep them solvent in later life

Maybe not. But there's definitely a case for kasper and kingy being allowed a joint one, maybe if they don't want the cash they could give it to charity.

Maybe they could have a team each and lean on international team mates to make up the numbers along with getting, fuchs, kante, mahrez etc back down here. What an evening tha could be.

Apparently Iversen doesnt want to be a backup, he wants to play 😬

Then I'd loan him out with an option to call him back if Kasper got injured. We could use the Development keeper as back up on the Bench.

I'd still sell Ward though. The return on investment doesn't justify keeping him with Kasper rartherly getting injured.

What worries me about this …

In recent years LCFC has been a unique club with a great business model and a beating heart.  Now many clubs are copying the model.  And we may be changing from that unique, startlingly successful entity, to another ordinary mid-table club too small to compete with the Greedy Six, yet too big to avoid being just another employer of short-term mercenaries.

In this time of uncertainty and potential decline, would jettisoning the captain -- a true and fiery leader, one-club man, and the keeper of the flame unique to this club -- accelerate a slide?  What is Kasper worth beyond his (admittedly replaceable) value on the pitch?

Can the flame stay burning after Vardy and Kasper are gone?  Do we really want to encourage either to exit at this inflection point?

Or maybe that’s where we’re unavoidably headed anyway.  And we should sell a playing asset while he still has value.  Because one of Ward/Iversen/Stolarczyk can do the job.

But IMO, Kasper has real value to this club beyond stopping shots and attracting the occasional lady fan.
