I mean, no he fvcking didn't. That's either ludicrous Chinese whispers or time just distorting the story.

I assume we're talking about the same night here because iirc this only "happened" once?

He wasn't "partying in a casino", he was sat at a table in Grosvenor with a bunch of local math geeks playing poker with a soft drink watching the football on the TV.

And I know this as absolute fact because one of the math geek regulars at Grosvenor is a good friend of mine who was there.

It's bad enough the kid gets assassinated with rubbish in the press, our own "fans" chipping in with this shit is inexcusable.

The media and Southgate massively latched onto it and created an 'attitude' narrative when it was an easy excuse for Southgate not to pick JM. Others in the current England squad have done worse but (rightly) not been frozen out.

Leicester City Academy graduate Luke Thomas has been called up for England's Under-21s squad.

- Leicester City's Luke Thomas has been called up to England Under-21s
- The Young Lions are to face Italy and Germany in friendlies later this month
- Thomas could add to his eight caps for England's youngsters

The Young Lions will host Italy and Germany in friendlies over the first international break of the 2022/23 season. Syston-born left-back Thomas has made eight appearances for England's Under-21s since his debut in September 2021.

Thomas, 21, has starred three times for City this term and is a winner of the Emirates FA Cup and FA Community Shield at the Club.

correct

but he’s clearly fallen out with Southgate - he liked a social media post that took the pee out of englands last few results so it’s obvs past the point of no return with the current coach

We’ve been through this several times! He did absolutely nothing wrong, neither has Southgate “latched onto this incident”. Southgate said at much at the time.

He had a cold and was feeling well enough to play but was told to go home by the England medical staff so it didn’t spread.

This was pre-covid and there was absolutely nothing wrong with going out when you have a cold.

He didn’t need to rest, he didn’t want to go home, he was just told to go home by England so it wouldn’t spread across the camp.

This was all public knowledge at the time and confirmed by Southgate and Maddison themselves. I have no idea why people want to retcon this story to make Maddison seem like he was doing absolutely anything wrong, he didn’t. And Southgate himself said this at the time, so it’s nothing to do with that incident.

It’s an absolute nothing story, I have no idea why people keep bringing it up.

Louder for the people at the back.

And honestly, anyone that hears the words "footballer" and "casino" and immediately starts getting visions of some Scorsese scene with VIPs, thousand pound glasses of champagne, half naked women, drugs and loud music clearly hasn't ever been to Grosvenor.

It's like a chess club in there. It's a simple room with a few poker tables full of regular hobbyists who enjoy the game. You might get a few pissed up Inbetweeners LadsLadsLads throwing their money away to the regulars but most at the tables are clear headed and focusing on winning because its a pastime they enjoy. There are probably nerds playing Dungeons and Dragons in Forbidden Planet that are more hardcore.

As far as I'm aware, Madders likes poker just like plenty of footballers like golf. If he'd been spotted on the sixth hole of Rothley golf course nobody would have given a shit. It's just the word "casino" immediately conjures up images of Vegasesque debauchery and excess which is fvcking hilarious if you've ever been in the casino in Leicester.

James Maddison is a very talented footballer and Southgate knows that. I don't think off field antics affect his decisions much. He has a lot of midfielders to choose from and International football is nothing like club football. There is little fluency, stodgy defensive play and often poor quality to contend with. Physicality can often get you through and that was Jimmy's weakness. He has improved considerably in that area but maybe Southgate thinks he has a way to go yet. He will get a proper chance eventually I expect either with us or another club. If he doesn't , he will join a whole list of great players with few caps , the brilliant Jimmy Greenhoff was never capped.

Southgate doesn't rate Maddison, simple as that. He doesn't rate Alexander-Arnold or Grealish either to be fair (which is starting to look fair enough) but has bowed to pressure to include them more but wouldn't be surprised if neither went to the world cup.

Every manager uses people they prefer, sometimes when better players are available. He will live by it. From our point of view Maddison not involved is a blessing.
