Top's OH Leuven comment shows stark Leicester City contrast with chairman set to attend fixture
The Belgian club have made an excellent start to the new season and sit inside the European spots after nine matches, with Top in town to watch their game this Saturday

Leicester City have lost six matches in a row and sit bottom of the table having conceded a record amount for this stage in a Premier League season. Fans are angry, the manager is under a huge amount of pressure, and there are financial concerns. For Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha, it is perhaps the most difficult period of his time as the club’s chairman.

Thankfully, there is only one club he needs to have concerns over right now, as it is all going swimmingly at OH Leuven, King Power's other side. Top will be in attendance this weekend as they look to continue their impressive start to the campaign, where he says they have shown a "fresh energy" and a "clear identity", both perhaps missing at City so far this term.

After back-to-back 11th-placed finishes in their first two seasons back in Belgium’s top flight, they have risen out of mid-table and up to fourth this term. Nine games in, they have 17 points to their name, winning five matches, drawing two, and losing two.

Those two defeats came in back-to-back games against Antwerp, who have won nine from nine so far, and against Club Brugge, the reigning champions. Since then, Leuven have gone unbeaten in five matches, and this weekend host Union SG, who topped the table for a long period last season, and who have made a fine start to their Europa League campaign.

Before he attends City's game on Monday, Top will be in the stands at the Den Dreef, watching a match in person for the first time since the pre-season friendly between King Power’s two clubs back in July, when a 3-3 draw was played out over 120 minutes. Leuven looked in impressive form that day, and have carried that into the season.

That they have only been defeated by the division’s leading sides so far stands them in good stead to keep up their good start. European qualification could even come into consideration. There is a long way to go, but if they were to finish fourth, their current position, they would move on to a four-team play-off for the title, while they would also be guaranteed at least a place in the qualifying rounds for the Europa Conference League.

Everything is going well off the pitch too. One of this season’s revelations, academy graduate Louis Patris, has signed a new contract with the club. His five assists from full-back see him lead the division’s creativity chart early on, and also earned him a maiden Belgium Under-21 call-up this international break. Captain and key man Mathieu Maertens, courted by Club Brugge, has also penned fresh terms this month.

It is no wonder that Top is excited to watch Leuven in action this Saturday. Writing in a blog post on the club’s website, he said: “The start of the season has been promising in all respects. I am very much looking forward to being at Den Dreef again for the match against Union SG.

"I have followed the good performances from a distance and have also seen a lot of positive support from our supporters. And this in both home and away matches.

"Our form this season looks very good, especially if you take into account the opponents we have already faced. The game against a team that was at the top of the league last season and that is also doing well in Europe is an excellent time to test our progress.

“When I was last in Leuven, for the fan day and the match against Leicester City, I noticed that there was fresh energy and a clear identity radiating from the team. This was extended into the opening weeks of the competition. Hopefully this will continue as well.

“I have always enjoyed the atmosphere at Den Dreef. This atmosphere is created by the passion and energy of the supporters and is without doubt also an important factor of the good start to the season.

“Sometimes the players need the supporters to push the team forward and at other times it's the players who inspire the supporters. This season, both the supporters and the players are performing at a high level and this could lead to something beautiful.”

Leuven is a small and cosy town with a lot of "older looking" buildings (some have been completely rebuild in the same style after having been bombed during the war). It's a student city, so plenty of pubs and student events all year round. I used to live in the middle of the center (two streets away from the town hall) for 4 years which was too me too noisy during the evenings, but nice during the day when people come shopping in the city. If you want some peace and quiet... avoid the center.

  • One of the eye catchers is our town hall, the most beautiful town hall in Europe:

  • We also have the largest "bar" in europe. On the old market square you can find one pub after the other which are filled by mostly students during the evenings or on sunny days:

image.png.029dd465cb79a3cb724da23dce1c8683.png

  • If you are into sports you can go to "sportkot". A domain of the university of Leuven where you can find a lot of sports accommodations e.g. swimming pool, gyms, football fields, a hockey field, tennis fields, multifunctional sports areas, etc... but there's a lot more in around Leuven to do as well. We even have a frisbee club:

  • Students get discounts on a plethora of goods and services e.g. buss passes, movie tickets, events, ...
  • During wintertime you should defenitely go to the yearly Christmas Market on the Ladeuzeplein and Herbert Hooverplein and try a shot of "Jenever" (Gin) that you can find in all kinds of flavours (granes, passion fruit, kiwi, apple, .... and even a speculoos one (cinnamon). It's also one of the cosiest and most beautiful in Europe. https://leuvensekerstmarkt.com/

  • There a lot of restaurants, bars, café's, fast food restaurants, ... in Leuven. But in Belgium, the only fast food you'll need are fries with one of many sauces and some snacks from one of the "frituren" in and around Leuven. I can recommend the "tartaar van het huis" sauce and a "mexicano" and "saté met kruiden" snack at "frituur Tervuursepoort". They serve the best fries you'll ever have ;)
  • There are small festivals in the city during the summer months
  • There's a fair in september
  • There's a British store in Everberg (not far from Leuven) called "Stonemanor" in case you miss your local goods too much ;) : https://www.stonemanor.uk.com/
  • We also have the best football team of ... Vlaams Brabant... COYW!
  • You can find more info about Leuven here: https://www.visitleuven.be/en

Thanks so much!! Sounds very cool indeed cant wait, hoping for some champions league nights as well ;)

RODGERS OUT !

Tamari out! Thorsteinsson wasn't too great either, but more efficient than that joke of a winger. I can't believe he got to play the whole 90 min.

Man of the match for OHL is Mendyl for me. De Norre and Patris had a good game too. On a positive note, Sofian Kyine's performance looked promising.

I think Thorsteinsson will warm the bench from now on. You can see a difference in class right away when Kiyine comes on. Ball control, vision, passing, ... It just feels more natural with him. Gonzalez is the best replacement we could find for Henry and he has good pace. I truly hope we'll find a similar replacement for Tamari in the next transfer window. He's good for Belgian's 2nd division, no more than that. I rather see Vlietinck or Dom play I think.

But we won, against a very weak Zulte in the 2nd half. If it were any other team in the 1st half today it would have been a different story I think. We were absolutely nowhere.

To be fair, I think we would've played better against any other team as well. It's hard to explain, but it does happen quite often that teams who are playing badly/worse than you actually tend to drag down your own level as well. I've had it happen myself in football games too.

I blame Brys for our 1st half performance to be honest. His gameplan was all wrong.

I understand that he wants us to play counter attacking football against teams like Club Brugge, Genk and Antwerp but why would you play like that against Zulte Waregem??? Zulte Waregem has both the worst offense and worst defense of the league. Against a team like that you take control of the game from kickoff and play attacking football. That is exactly what we did in the second half and we scored 5 times!
