OH Leuven Thread 2022/23

I saw no improvement in how we play. Is it the quality of the players or Brys' tactic... or both? Passing, finishing, ball control, playing out of defense were overall poor. Ok the referee was an idiot, so the scoreline doesn't reflect the true strength, but I was hoping to see some positive changes. Some players are just not at the proper level. Cojocaru is a good line goalkeeper, but don't let him pass a ball under pressure. A lot of danger comes from Tamari, but sadly you know up front where that ball will go eventually.

On the upside, Keita was very strong yesterday.

...I feel your team is screaming for a midfield schemer who can play teammates into space and find ways of utilizing the players we have!!!

Tamari has been a worry for a long time, Maertens and the new striker need to have that supply and the team needs someone to control the pace of the game when needed. I mentioned before one of our up-and-coming players in our under-21 team, Sammy Braybrooke. He needs game time and learning how to control a game, he would be a great fit, it would suit LCFC and Leuven at the same time.

I doubt that Brys will continue using loans from LCFC. I think he wants to choose his own players and go for permanent deals (which would benefit OHL in the long term... if they are a good buy at least). I think he brought in Holzhauser for that role you speak off. But he's a bit of a laughing stock at the moment. He is technicallt gifted, but struggles with movement. When he comes on people in the stands laugh at how he's picking his spot where he can stand for the rest of the match. We miss Mercier tremendously... I think he's wasting away on the Ferencvaros bench nowadays.

Sooo transfers... any news?

In his look back on 2022, Brys jokingly asked for some good transfers but not heard anything lately, except that Al-Tamari is being chased by Nantes, since his contract runs out in the summer I would definitely sell now.

On another note, apparently Anderlecht is trying to sign Sory Kaba from Midtjylland, would be nice to see him again at Den Dreef

Not sure what scout Anderlecht has send to Denmark... I bet he had all kinds of disabilities to see something useful in that player.

This made me smile (a bit)

OH Leuven closed 2022 with a hard-fought and earned point at Club Brugge. For example, the year in which OH Leuven was allowed to celebrate its twentieth birthday ends in eighth place in the standings.

Coach, how do you look back on 2022?

The second period of last season we tried to stand firm, by trial and error. For example, after a good game we won for the first time in our own home with KRC Genk, but we also lost too many unnecessary points. In the end, like our first year in the Jupiler Pro League, we finished eleventh in the standings. But that was what the impetus was given to be ambitious this season.

And I think we're doing a good course this season. With good and surprising football. We played good games, but of course also lesser ones. We often didn't get what we deserved either. The period where we took the fewest points, we might just play our best football. But football is all about taking points. That's why the point on Bruges, deep in injury time, pleased us a lot.

What was the most beautiful victory for you?

Each match has its own scenario, but there are some matches that stand out. The 1-3 victory over Standard, for example. In a witch cauldron we played well in the switch, scored nice goals and eventually managed to hold out. The match at Zulte Waregem, the second half anyway, was also very spectacular due to the score course. I also remembered the game at RSC Anderlecht. We didn't win that game, but it was really a reference match in terms of game level and dynamics. And we also score two very nice goals.

And the hardest moment of last year?

Without a doubt the match on Eupen. We were in our group with nine sick people. Several boys couldn't ride the bus because they had to vomit all the time. It was a really tough game and a very difficult time to see your group deflate like this. There was no more power, no more gravy. I'm not going to forget that moment anytime soon. Issame's departure? We worked together so long and so well. We shared love and suffering, but that's why I'm so proud and proud. He was ready to take that step. So it's mainly a good story, not a difficult one.

OH Leuven is a club in full growth. What steps were taken this year?

The club has taken steps in every department. Both sporty and extra-sporty. The infrastructure in the Banqup Campus in Oud-Heverlee and the conditions for training are very good. The scouting device works more structured, there is good interaction with the board and we sit with them weekly. The longer I'm here, the more I feel like we're becoming a family. All with the same goal: to expand OH Leuven in a structured way. The synergy between the player group and the supporters is also very strong this year. They support very positively and help us through difficult moments in the match. However, their support makes the boys play better.

What can we wish for you before 2023?

A few good transfers (laughs)! No, I just hope the club is doing well in 2023 as well. That we can continue to work on a good balance with the staff and the player group and then the results follow.

...when you have Nsingi playing wide on the right and Tamari cutting inside, you know you just have not got the balance right!!!

His service with crosses were poor and he needed to be in the box while Tamari supplied from out wide.

You really need someone in the middle that can progress upfield with the ball at his feet and your system is crying out for such a player. We have one sitting on our bench not getting game time. As I  said before, the way the game is played in Belgium it would suit him.

A 4-3-3 with De Norre  Braybrooke and Keita would be strong with a lot of the creativity coming from Braybrooke.

We would have Tamari  as a wide Forward, Maertens central and Gonzalez wide Left.

Johan Hove won't come, signed for Groningen.

Chakla on his way to Ponferradina

Apparently negotiating with Malinov to extend his contract, after the Eupen match don't think he has much manoeuvring room left :D

Tamari still with us after saying goodbye already after the Westerlo match

Worth letting you know … I can’t often watch your matches, but always have time to watch the highlights and see how KP’s Belgian team looks on the pitch.  I’m sure I’m not the only one who appreciates these.

Plus it's expanded my Flemish (?) vocabulary from about 20 beer names to include “erste”, “tweede” and “helft”.
