Managed to navigate the leuven website and book 2 tickets for me and my son for the king power showdown. Looking forward to it, should be a great day out and hopefully a cracking game. Hopefully see a fair few fellow foxes out there too 🦊

Did you have to make accounts for both of you?

The League just voted on a new system: the 2023/2024 season will be played with 16 teams instead of 18. This means that there will be 3 or 4 teams dropping down to the 2nd division at the end of this season.

For this season the rules are as follows:

18 teams that play 34 games each. Then the Play-offs start

The teams that finish 1st, 2nd, 3th and 4th will compete for the championship and European qualification in the Champions Play-offs

The teams that finish 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th will compete for the 1 remaining European ticket in the European Play-offs

For teams 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 the season ends after 34 games. They're safe from relegation.

The team that finishes in 15th place will have to compete with the team that finishes 2nd in the 2nd division.

Teams 16, 17 and 18 will drop down to the 2nd division automatically

OH Leuven have followed Leicester City’s lead and dropped King Power as their shirt sponsor in order to generate more revenue.

The Belgian side, also owned by the Thai duty free company, will not bear the company’s name on their matchday shirts in the upcoming season. That was a move also taken by City at the start of last term, when they welcomed online trading company FBS as their shirt sponsor.

King Power had adorned City’s shirts for every season from their takeover in 2010 through to 2020, when the company, in partnership with the Thai tourism board, had ‘Thailand smiles with you’ on their kits. They then signed a three-year deal with FBS last summer.

It was the same for OH Leuven, who bore King Power on their shirts following the takeover in 2017, but are now sponsored by Belgian gambling site Starcasino. Their new kits, made by Stanno rather than previous manufacturers Adidas, will be unveiled in their game against City on July 16, the clubs meeting for the first time in a public friendly having previously played behind closed doors.

Their new kit will be unveiled when the two clubs meet in their first official friendly against each other, the game played at King Power at Den Dreef Stadium on Saturday, July 16

Boo!!!

....it makes you wonder, what is the point of the league!!!

You might as well flip a coin at the start of the season, and hope to stay in the league. Is all these play offs a way to make money for the Belgian F.A, because they get a percentage of the receipts of all the play-off games?. I cannot see how this over complicated format helps anyone. The team finishing top wins the league, it is pointless finishing top and not being Champions.

Our Rugby team is about to play a game tomorrow where via a top four play off we are about to play for the Championship. Finishing top meant nothing, but the RFU (Rugby Football Union) is going to get a kick back from the gate receipts.

I think there needs to be a revision of your whole system, it just gives a false idea that their is actual competition going on, due to play-offs further down the league, everything should be on merit.

Couldn't agree more.

This play-off system is all constructed by the "big teams' (Anderlecht, Genk, Gent, Club Brugge, Standard, Antwerp) so they can make more money (TV-deals, extra ticket sales,...). They decide everything.

Ewoud Pletickx is a is 21-year-old Belgian CB. He signed a 4-year deal with our club.

Pletinckx came through the youth ranks of Zulte Waregem where he made his debut for their first team at the age of 18. Despite his young age Pletincks already has 84 games under his belt in our 1st division. He's also a member of the Belgian U23 squad.

Good signing in my opinion. Love to see our club giving chances to young, Belgian players!

Actually, play-offs are great for smaller leagues:

  • more matches between the big teams,
  • allows teams playing in Europe to focus their attention on that in the early season,
  • shifts the decision to later in the season which creates excitement and helps sell the product.
  • a regular competition also means about half the teams are done halfway through the season as they know they won't go into Europe but are clear of relegation. This new format solves most of these issues, although the initial proposal was even better (14 teams with all teams avoiding dead rubbers almost until the end).

Many supporters keep struggling to accept anything else than a boring regular season though, unfortunately. Leagues using playoffs right now (ordered by UEFA league rank): Netherlands; Belgium, Austria, Scotland, Denmark, Cyprus, Serbia, Czech Republic, Greece, Israel, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Northern Ireland, Finland, Malta, Gibraltar, Wales, Estonia; Andorra & San Marino.

Most important decision however was that they FINALLY agreed to have more teams going up an down. Has been just 1 team for many years which actually financially kills the teams in the second division trying to go up. Now it will be 2+1 which is much better. The smaller teams have been blocking this for years (probably OH Leuven as well when they were not in the second div), but honestly I prefer OH Leuven to relegate and promote again rather than finish each season mid-table, boring!

By the sound of this interview he seems to be a natural born leader... You'd think he's 28 when you hear him talk like this. Could be a good player for us indeed.

I was going to post a moan about this being ridiculous and needlessly complicated ...

Then I realized, for the Belgian leagues, it actually represents simplification.

New signing:

Valentin Cojocaru is a 26-year-old goalkeeper from Romania. He just signed a 3-year deal with our club.

Cojocaru made his professional debut at the age of 18 for Steaua Bucharest in the Romanian 1st division. During the 2016/2017 season he was send on loan to Crotone in the Italian Serie A, but didn’t get any playing time. In January 2017 Crotone send him on loan to Frosinone in the Serie B, but again he didn’t get any playing time.

In the summer of 2017 he signed for Apollon Limassol in Cyprus but yet again didn’t get any minutes. He returned to Romania in January of 2018 where he signed for FC Viitorul Constanța (1st division) where he played 13 games. In the 2018/2019 season he played 35 games (all competitions) but was send out on loan for the 2019/2020 season where he played for FC Voluntari (1st division). He played 19 games. He returned to FC Viitorul for the 2020/2021, playing 32 games.

In the summer of 2021 he signed for Dnipro in the Ukranian 1st division where he was the starting goalkeeper, playing 14 games. Since the Ukranian league was cancelled due to the war, he was send out on loan to Feyenoord (Dutch 1st division) in March 2022. He didn’t play a game for the Dutch side.

It's a ridiculous system! Most of the Belgian football fans are against it!

A short interview with our goalie

And some highlights

If he can play out of defense and can stay focused for 90min. as well, he will already be better than our last two goalkeepers :)

Another interview with the coach.

5-6 more (attacking) reinforcements are in the pipeline. He is not worried and expects them to join soon, including players to have more options in certain positions.

He is happy with the fact that we are buying players now instead of loaning them.

Fixtures released last week, from MD7 on still to be determined.

Very challenging start, OHL needs at least 4 points in July because August will be hard and with three teams relegating you really need a good start.

....just trying to read those dates and they just did not make any sense!!!

It did not matter how I looked at them, it really was a mystery, and wondered if this is a Belgian thing overcomplicating everything. Then I looked closer and what I thought were dots was actually minus signs, therefore stipulating games to be played within selected dates. I was tearing my hair out as I just could not work it out. Been to Specsavers recently, might need another trip.
