OH Leuven Thread 2022/23

....it looks like King Power has decided to go back to basic and build a young squad who are not going to get broken up every season!!!

The players so far look great and your view of a top 10 is underplaying our potential. The team last season lacked control in the middle that was a team that gave away silly goals and vastly underachieved. We are going to be looking and reaching for the top 4 next season, I have seen other teams from last season, and we are capable of it.

A lot will depend on the quality of the striker(s) we'll get and on our style of play. If we play on the counter and leave such gaps as we did previous season, we'll be around that 10th spot or worse. We lost a lot of points against "smaller" teams like that. If we can get a clinical striker that scores for fun we could aim for a top 8. It's nice to have ambition, but I don't think anyone at OHL is thinking of a top 4 spot for the coming season. :)

Let's see first if, as we say here, "De mayonaise pakt" (translated: if we can make a team of these players). :fc:

The Belgian league is a tricky one, mate. Like all "smaller" teams our first concern should be to fight off relegation, especially since there are 3 teams dropping down at the end of this season. If we have a bad start of the season, which is very realistic since we have to play big teams like Club Brugge, Antwerp and Standard in our first 5 games, we might be in a relegation battle all season long.

Like I said before, this goes for every "smaller" team in the Belgian 1st division. Even teams like KV Mechelen and Union, who had a great season last year, will be in trouble if they have a bad start especially since they lost some of their best players and manager: Union lost Undav (their top goalscorer), will probably lose Vanzeir and will almost certainly lose Nielsen. Their manager (Mazzu) has left for Anderlecht and has been replaced by Karel Geeraerts, who was their assistent-manager last season. Same goes for KV Mechelen: they lost Cuypers (top goalscorer) to KAA Gent, Vinicius Souza (end of loan) and will most certainly lose Nikola Storm. Their manager (Vrancken) has also left (KRC Genk) and has been replaced by newcomer Danny Buijs. Their new players have some big shoes to fill...

We have to build a new team for the 3th season in a row. We lost Mercier, who was our best player for the last 2 seasons. I like the signings so far, but like Phugalu said, we still have to wait and see if they can function as a team. Furthermore, I think we still need at least 2 key players, more specifically a centre-back who functions as the leader of our defense and a striker who knows how to score a goal. We also need a back-up striker and I wouldn't mind an extra CAM, RW and CB.

The transfer window is still open until August 31st and every club can still sign a lot of new players, so it's very difficult to rate our opponents at this moment. Like I said before, our first concern should be to not be in the relegation battle. If we can avoid that we can look up and try to qualify for play-off 2 (we need a top-8 finish for that), but if we would finish in the top-10 I would consider this season a great succes.

Yes indeed the transfer work is far from done. Defensively we lost Ozkacar, Dewaest and youngster Raemaekers and while Pletinckx does have a lot of experience for a 21yo, his former club

ZulteWaregem was mainly at the bottom end of the table over the last few seasons, while I agree avoiding relegation is first prio, the aim should be higher than the level of Zulte Waregem. Good striker is always diff to get and also: will they be able to hold on to Keita??? Schrijvers out until 2023 is also a bummer but better injured going into the transfer window rather than at the end.

...oh and imho Holzhauser is a real gamble. Hope he'll be worth his wage, no particular feelings about Dom and while you can pick them up without transfer fee, getting players from the relegated team is always a risk. Only one I would immediately get is Ilias Sebaoui, but seems they're managing to hold on to him despite relegation

Mendyl confirmed.

From the website: "Hamza Mendyl is a great talent with experience in big leagues and at international level and as an international for his country. He is a fast and agile left back who is strong in the build-up," said an elated coach Marc Brys.

Hope y'all understand either French or Dutch:

Hamza Mendyl has signed a 3-year deal with our club. Mendyl is a 24-year-old Maroccan left-back.

At the age of 19 he left Marocco and joined Lille (French 1st division). He made his professional debut on February 16th 2017 in a 1-0 win over Caen. He would play 13 games for Lille’s first team. In August of 2018 Hamza signed a 5-year deal with Schalke04 (German 1st division). Due to injury he would only play 16 games (including 6 games in the Champions League) for Schalke in the 2018-2019 season. He was send on loan to Dijon (French 1st division) for the 2019-2020 season, where he played 20 games.

In the summer of 2020 he returned to Schalke, but would mostly sit on the bench and only played 5 games in 2020-2021. The next season he was send out on loan again, this time to Gaziantep FK in the Turkish 1st division playing 23 games.

Hamza has also played 20 games for his county.

Didn't play much at Schalke and despite the team relegating in 2021, he was sent out on loan to Gaziantep for the 2021-22 season. Last cap for Morocco was in October 2020. Hope his career is still going up rather than down.

Philipp Schobesberger (28) came on today in today’s friendly win vs Beerschot (2-1 win)

Hmm... it was actually Beerschot that mentioned he was part of a trio testing with them about two weeks ago (https://www.beerschot.be/nl/nieuws/beerschot-vat-eerste-trainingen-aan), in the meantime they've signed the two others. Wonder how this went, did OHL find out (through Holzhauser as fellow Austrian international?) and offer him a test as well or did Beerschot simply reject him after which he's trying elsewhere...

The Austrian Mathieu Maertens' injury history might work against him though. Once the ligaments are ruptured, it's never going to be the same as before. He missed a lot of football in the last 3 seasons. It's a bit of a risk to hire him, but he looks to be a great backup for both flanks either way if he can stay injury free.

Holzhauser and him share the same player agent by the way.image.png.6d1cef7c2825338aab8058c37ebdf447.png

Looks like a very good player. Better than what I've seen from Coopman and Schobesberger. If he joins on loan, I hope there's a buying clause included in the contract because Brys said that he didn't want to build a new team every season. Else that claim wouldn't make sense.

Moroccan here. Hamza has good attacking talent... But defensively he's been so so at best. Needs to improve physically and be more courageous defensively. Often times was too passive and shy with the national team. Still relatively young though
