Set Piece Coach

Was just thinking this, we might have stumbled across a very, very capable and intelligent coach that has the ability to take charge of a team. I suspect if Brendan were ever to be sacked or walk that Lars is part of or the caretaker manager.

It was the way Villa handled their 'set piece' coach during the recent transition that sparked my interest.

He stayed on before, during and now into Emery's spell, the only member of staff to servive the previous regime.

Clubs are placing a lot of emphasis on the specialism, and in an age where 'deep thinkers' like Potter are all the rage, it wouldn't surprise me if one of these specialists took the step up.

Occurred to me earlier we would have stood a much better chance at the Conference League if we'd appointed him last season.

Where would we have finished in the league, out of our 59 goals conceded, I think 19 were set pieces.

Without those, we would have had the joint 4th best defence.

which is nothing to do with the set piece coach ........ he's thrown himself under the bus - get Jason on the case !!!

...I really think people have become fixated on the word "Set Piece" he is a coach first and foremost, he is not just limited to setting up Deadball situations!!!

The defense is very much what we supporters focus on, but in a defensive set-piece situation, the midfielders need to be organized as well, as they will be used as blockers and the forwards or attacking wide players are in a situation waiting to break on the opposition.

I am sure he does not work in isolation.

Rodgers comments that our set up in transition wasn’t right - that its more compact now. We shouldn’t have needed a new coach to sort that out.

however, it’s well documented that a change of voice helps players - maybe letting this fella take the major part of what’s happening on the training pitch is helping just from that perspective

if course we will be without him whilst Denmark are in the World Cup

.....I totally agree with you on this, absolutely no question about Rodgers's shortcomings as well as his staff!!!

I have been saying for a few seasons that Rodgers needed someone to come in and work alongside him, so far it seems like a good balance and you can see if Rodgers ever leaves to go elsewhere Knudsen will be someone he would be reluctant not to bring with him.

It does say something that we have a coach at the world cup, kudos to him and Denmark.

Can't be this much of a coincidence can it?

something the commentators picked up on was how good we were when we lost the ball at one point at their end . A player slowed the keeper down from a quick break a couple of players slowed other players  down and the defence sprinted back

I agree. He comes in and all of a sudden we look rock solid defensively in all areas. No coincidence at all. What it does highlight is what have the original coaching  staff been doing!?

Some may find it interesting that yesterday's announcement of Wieghorst's sick leave means that Knudsen, assistant for the Danish NT and former Leicester set piece coach, is now promoted to Team Manager for Denmark's upcoming Nations League games :o

Do we have anyone at the club currently that works on set pieces? Worth its weight in gold for any team fighting at the bottom of the table if we can score some goals from set pieces like we did against Fulham.

Yes, we brought in Norwich's, which seems to have an impact. We defend them pretty well against Spurs and, like you said, score a goal at Fulham.

Yeh was just looking at his career to see if he'd worked with Cooper previously but doesn't look like he has. We're not the tallest team but don't always need to be of there is planning goes into set pieces. Out of the usual starting 11 we only have Vester, Faes and Ndidi that are tall. Kristiansen isn't a bad height for a full back.

Don't underestimate how good Vardy is at defending corners. Always stands on the corner of the 6yd box towards the corner taker. He's done this under numerous coaches so they must recognise how effective he is.
