Set Piece Coach

Clubs have appointed overseas managers and coaches this summer and got them so there must be some sort of priority system if you chuff up.

Seems crazy given our issues last season this hasn’t been sorted. So much the Club does is top draw but this and Glover makes you scratch your head.

Glover is straightforward - top employees have big contracts and generally go on a few months gardening leave on their departure

this set piece coach - you can’t apply for a visa until they’ve accepted a role. I assume we couldn’t/didn’t  do that until three weeks ago. I mean we’re not the type of club that doesn’t get deals over the line last minute …….

Honestly what the hell is going on at this club? A head of recruitment who won't join until the window is shut, a set piece specialist not even here in time for pre-season, no outgoings or incomings during a window we've been planning for for about 6 months plus... Absolutely shambolic stuff.

The best thing about the current owners' tenure here has been how professional and well-run the club has been. What is going on at this point? Everything just seems so poorly organised and badly thought out.

Looks like the off the field the club are making efforts to rectify the issues from last season, with a new doctor, set piece coach etc.

Just need a new Manager and that will complete the set

we are a shambles! utter utter shambles! How can a club as bad at set pieces as us not even get a set piece coach sorted before the season!

Seriously what has happened to our club?

it feels like we are falling apart, slowly but surely. Top needs to get a bit nasty, drain the swamp my man !

Like others have alluded to, why was this guy not ready to work on the first day of pre season giving us time to start implementing and working on his ideas!

Everything seems a mess at the moment.

I doubt the club has access to home office issues tbf.

The club probably thought he was a much better candidate than any British or Irish citizen and probably didn’t count on the lengthy wait at the Home Office, probably due to giving priority processing Ukrainian refugees.

gives the manager an easy excuse when we concede 2 on the opening day?

”look, we didn’t manage to get our set piece coach in, and i didn’t get the rebuild i had planned. I think our fans need to understand where the club is at. Losing 4-0  to Brentford is a good achievement for us”

It’s ridiculous, Elliot and Taggart are around the ground most match days.

Walsh?

Surely they could offer a bit of input in the meantime whilst waiting for the new coach.

Elliot was lethal in the opposition box to.

Being good at them as a player is massively different to being able to coach it into players

A lot of the set piece coaches around in the Prem have never even been players

Attack the ball!!! It ain’t hard.

for reference Matt Elliot, Steve Walsh,

Yeah and the attackers/opposition aren’t the same.

Times change, tactics change. Teams spend hours on attacking set pieces. Just ‘attacking the ball’ clearly isn’t sufficient. We also don’t have an ‘Elliott or Walsh’ playing for us.

I’m not talking about permanently, they could offer input on heading though.

How on earth did those players I mentioned ever manage without set pieces coaches in 90s and 00s.

I am pretty sure our players will be fine at heading

It is more around the systems; overloading certain areas of the box, movement etc. that is what needs to be worked on

Times change yea, but let’s be honest the corner taker lofting the ball into the box 90 percent of the time hasn’t changed a huge amount.

Tactical and Zonal marking, not every team we conceded corners to last year had the benefit of Gianni Vio or a set piece specialist

Fair points, our height (or lack of it) doesn’t help. Not only does this hamper us, teams target us in this respect. If they can pin our 2 CBs, and they have one or two other 6ft+ players, they already have a massive advantage. The keeper absolutely refusing to come off the line also doesn’t help. They can put a ball into a very dangerous area and their players have a great chance of winning a header without it being collected.

There should be a way to cope with this, or at least not get bullied like we do. A good set piece/goalkeeping coach would be a good starting point.

I think it’s underestimated how vital every aspect of football is to get a result, teams having tactics for set pieces against us gets them points.

Most of that was a rant in general not aimed at you @HankMarvin

Having a goal keeper capable of high claims will be a huge advantage, I’m not sure overloading the box and movement caused us solely to concede 14 or 15 corners goals.

Lots of teams in the division that didn’t have set piece coaches and on paper worse defenders, conceded considerably less.

it’s seems like the need for set piece coaches has trickled down from the top clubs leveraging every advantage they can.

Considering we pay BR £10m a season you would’ve hoped he caught wind of this 2 seasons ago when we finished joint bottom with Leeds with 11 conceded.
