Troubles In Leicester

Recommended Posts

The saving grace for Leicester is us local born Asians of all faith know the score, we are mates who grew up together drank ate together ****ed about together, that's why no local lads really want to get involved, you beat a Muslim up, and your Muslim mates find out, you're  ****ed an vice versa, same goes with Sikh, who back in the day had a lot of top boys around Leicester.

So, lots of countries in the world are suffering with a rise in right wing populism. The right wing (from the centre right all the way out to the far right) have been using the economy to fuel populist rhetoric and build support for increasingly right wing ideologies for the last couple of decades (well, forever, but it's been much easier since the global financial meltdown.)

In the States they had the Tea Party and later MAGA and Trump, over here you've got Farage, BJ and Brexit, in France it's Le Pen and Co, all different brands of the same thing using nationalist, patriotic sentiment, fear mongering, often using religion and identity politics to divide and conquer.

Well India is no different, Narenda Modi (their leader) is low key terrifying. His political party are far right populists but beyond that he's also a member of a fascist paramilitary organisation (RSS) that seems to be weirdly normalised in Indian politics. Modi uses Hindu nationalism as a platform and is violently opposed to anyone that, well, isn't a Hindu nationalist. This isn't good news for Muslims and Sikhs in particular.

Like lots of extremist paramilitary groups, the RSS does outreach in its diaspora globally (like the IRA and UVF courting American sympathisers during the Troubles) and is suspected to be behind a lot of campaigning in Hindu Indian communities in the UK (and probably elsewhere) and is alleged to be behind an increasing rise in anti Muslim and anti Sikh sentiment in Leicester.

There are accusations that pro RSS / Modi youths have been provoking Muslim communities in Leicester over recent times and that things came to a head recently following the cricket but the cricket was more a spark that lit a lot of gasoline that's been lobbed around as opposed to really the cause itself.

This is really, really helpful, thank you.

Started in May with an attack on a Muslim youth - no arrests were made.

There was then 2 India vs Pakistan cricket matches which really ignited everything.

After the first one which india won Indians came out in numbers on the streets celebrating but that then turned into chants of things like ‘death to Pakistan’ and then later into mobs attacking a lone Sikh man on belgrave road in front of police.

A week later and there was the second match between india and Pakistan and this time Pakistan won - there was mild celebrations from Pakistan fans which isn’t anything out of the ordinary (happens every time the teams play) but the streets around Belgrave road were lined with Indians baying for blood of anyone celebrating Pakistan’s victory. There was a heavy police presence around the area compared to the week before where police were caught completely off guard, seemingly not knowing there was a game taking place.

Around 2am that night in the Green lane area of the city, on Bridge road a group of around 30 Indian men attacked a Muslim youth outside his house, leaving him with multiple injuries and hospitalising him. Again no arrests were made.

This led to Muslims around the city calling for action and coming on to the streets in the Green lane area to protect their people and to show strength in numbers over the next 10 or so days. Police were straight on to this with a heavy presence each night and using section 34 and 35 for dispersal orders etc.

All seemed to have calmed down again until Saturday when around 6pm a mob of about 200+ Hindu youths all masked up and many carrying weapons marched down from belgrave road and through Green lane road attacking innocent Muslims along the way and throwing glass bottles etc. They were led by police on this March through the city with no thought of the consequences. It wasn’t until later that evening that it was realised 2 full coaches of these thugs had been transported from Ealing in London. Police denied any knowledge of it but as they led the March the public were not having any of it.

Again this led to Muslims coming out in full force and what then happened on Saturday night would probably be classed as close to a riot. People decided to take matters into their own hands and hunt these thugs down and it ended up with both parties on Belgrave road with police trying to keep them apart.

The thought amongst most people is that in this City Hindus and Muslims have lived together peacefully for years on end but the BJP/RSS Hindutva ideology which is stemming from India is what is causing the issues. Youths are coming over from there and radicalising Hindus who are trying to bring that on to our streets.

This is the mob on Saturday marching through a majority Muslim area looking for trouble. This is what ignited Saturday nights chaos.

Today on BBC Radio 4 did a measured report on this an hour ago.

Spoke to some locals, discussed the causes and chatted to a local academic about relations in the city historically and the challenges it faces moving forward.

Soulsby will have it sorted.

More roadworks and one way streets with pedestrian areas only on green lane road.
