I just don't get what happened there? Why did he have to go over to the monitor? I thought that VAR would check if he's offside and if he is then no penalty - offside is not subjective - it is or it isn't - why does it need the ref's "opinion"?

Jenas is being thick.

He's being asked to judge whether or not the player that blatantly was offside is interfering with play which is a subjective decision that the ref has to make.

It's not about the player being in line or not. He's obviously offside. It's about whether he interfered. Surely that's obvious, why all the manufactured outrage about VAR again?

That is how I saw it

Yes clearly as he jumped for thr ball with the defender.

I still say on incredibly tight offsides like that a margin of error should be introduced and just rule them onside with no advantage gained. Which there wasn't.

VAR really is shockingly shite

It’s not, it’s just that Jenas who is well informed on this stuff acts the fool. The ball comes in and the Belgian player is the one who gets to the ball, he’s competing against a Croatian player who is in an offside position so the laws of the game require the referee to give a subjective decision on whether he has interfered and altered the course of play.

This is the 2nd or 3rd time it has happened in a game Jenas is commentating on this tournament alone, he’s well aware and he could easily inform TV viewers rather than drumming up drama.

It’s subjective because it’s the referee’s decision on the pitch whether he has interfered or not. If that same player was to get his head on it and score and the goal was to be given VAR would rule it out because he was offside-objectively.

Shades of Jonathan Pearce completely missing the point of goal line tech.

VAR is the worst thing that has ever happened to any sport. Absolute shit.

I went full 180 on the idea. The way they described it working sounded wonderful. The implementation is horrible. Their should be no need for pitch side screens if it's being implemented correctly.

It should be a simple black and white call that can be made within 10 seconds of the replays being available.

Get to the right decision which is good but taking too long and the lack of communication/understanding doesn’t help .

The issue is the TV producers are privy to the comms between VAR and the referee (only when the line of communication is opened between VAR and referee), they just don’t share the information to commentators which then doesn’t make it to the audience.

In cricket the fans get to hear what the umpire is talking about and considering in his decision

Surely football could do something similar to increase transparency and awareness of what is going on
