Exactly. You can't tell anything from one match. A fancied team that cruises to an easy win (England, France, Spain)? Might mean they're really good, but also it might be the only time they play well, or it might turn out their opponents are actually the weakest team in the competition. A team that is usually decent but plays rubbish and loses (Germany, Argentina)? They might indeed be crap, but that might be an uncharacteristic off day, or they might simply grow into the tournament.

You only really have any idea who's looking good once all the group games have finished. And even then it can be misleading; a team can sail through their group and then crash out feebly in the first knockout game.

Youri will be gutted to be dropped having been a fixture in the Belgium side for the last 3 or 4 years and having been in great form in the month leading up to the WC. I'm sure he also saw it as a great platform to showcase his talents to potential suitors, an opportunity which he has2  failed to take, it seems.

 

A midfield 2 of Witzel and Onana brings back memories of Puel's midfield 2 of Ndidi and Mendy back in the day!!
