I saw a good quote on Twitter today which was that British politicians know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

This is the British public, not just our politicians. This is why they are voted for.

That the public don't want to pay for anything of value for future generations is one of the major reasons for the country's current shabbiness.

Quite right. And building (and paying) for that future is important in more ways than one.

She is beyond parody, she is the living indictment of that old joke:

"How would you define being British?"

"Being British is about driving your German car home from work, stopping off for a pint at an Irish pub, then going home and getting an Indian takeaway to eat on your Swedish furniture, while watching American tv shows on your Japanese TV, all the while being suspicious of anything foreign."

Had a good crowd for her epoch making speech. Could have saved money and booked somewhere a lot smaller. Like a broom cupboard.

Real 'rivers of blood vibes' and lots of front covers for her leadership bid...

So many people being triggered by new govt policy ideas being flown and also ‘implemented’

it’s all politics ahead of the GE - they don’t need to believe it - they may well not.  They know that they have to  create some clear water between them and Labour.  There is a proportion of their core support that will vote Labour if they can’t see any reason not to. There is a proportion of the middle ground that will respond positively to the new policies.  welcome to the next general election - campaigning has begun

... is there really a statistically significant proportion of people in the middle ground that display such prejudice and contempt for the future of human civilisation?

Not good if that's true tbh.

I’m not sure this kind of policy will be popular with the middle ground tbh. It’s about as red meat as they come.

It speaks more to me of accepting they’ve lost the next election and setting themselves apart from Labour for the following 2029/30 election, because they know Labour will have to pick up the excessive application backlog in the home office caused by chronic understaffing.

They can then say “Labour had a policy different to our ours, this wouldn’t happen under us”, even if the issue was something they inherited from the current Tory government, people forget these things within 5 years.

This is great news. British assets extracted and subsidised by the tax payer.

The oil sold to the highest bidder on the open market and almost all profits are taken offshore tax free.

So much winning!

...and all contributing to an overall situation where sooner rather than later hundreds of millions of people (at the least) will die , suffer and/or be displaced.

Winning indeed.

Rather akin to the points raised regarding the water industry in the Paul Whitehouse programme last night Britain's Troubled Rivers.

Would be if what was extracted was tied to this country at an independently set price.

The argument for extracting "our own" so it makes us less reliant on despots or lowers the overall planetary damage because you don't have to pollute to ship it far goes completely out the window when it just gets slapped on the open world market at the going rate for the benefit of no one but the already rich.

Quite. So not brilliant for a few reasons tbh.

If you’re a racist xenophobe, you do not occupy the middle ground.

There really are some people who won’t see much difference between the two parties but will lap up the tories painting Labour as soft on ‘illegal immigration’

if you dont believe me then explain brexit !

Fair to say.

As per above though, here's hoping there aren't enough to be statistically significant.

Another fatal stabbing in London. Youth on youth crime. What the hell goes through the minds of these people.

Was it youth on youth?

I've seen the headlines say a schoolgirl has been stabbed to death but that's it.

Though this seems to be a more regular occurance nowadays.
