Could be that they’re mad and doing it for illogical reasons. Could be they’re trying to impress someone.

Or it could be that they’re just callous and doing it for the sport of upsetting people. It’s not like you need to search social media for long to find people like that.

Yes, another rather depressing feature of some in our midst

Why, just... why? :cry::mad:

It's international level c**tery isn't it?

You know the cops have gone into the local secondary school and said, please tell us anonymously who's a big enough c*** to have done this and been given a list where one name comes up again and again.

To destroy something so irreplaceable, so iconic..the only thing I can think of that's similar is when the Taliban blew up those massive ancient statues. This lad is going to be about as popular

This is sad. Quite a remarkable commitment to vandalism from somebody....

What's so sad, is that you can't actually repair the damage.   Nature takes 100's of years to create something beautiful, and some knob destroys it for no (good) reason.

Artificial structures can often be repaired - even terrible fires like at Windsor Castle or Notre-Dame.   But you can't put back this magnificent tree.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after one of the most photographed trees in the country was cut down.

The 16-year-old boy is being held in police custody and is said to be assisting officers with their enquiries.

Superintendent Kevin Waring, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a world-renowned landmark and the events of today have caused significant shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community and beyond.

He'll get a talking to & let go no charge no doubt.

What a horrible and tragic death of a 15 year old. The poor girl was going to school fgs. What a sick world we live in, when young men seem to think it’s normal behaviour to carry zombie knives.

London is now stab city, and it’s all on Khan’s watch. He should resign.

No sicker that what has preceded it. People just like to romanticise the past.

See what the YMCA has to say about government cuts to youth services

On the topic of the fallen tree, I'm reminded of the last part of the Lord of the Rings - the "Scouring of the Shire" - where agents of Saruman cut down trees and spoil the land in the Shire, not for any real gain in the long run, but purely out of spite.

This sounds very much like that - just spite.

So that makes a you carry a zombie knife? Strange reply.

You do see everything in isolation. How many times have famous boxers for example said their local club turned them away from crime. The cuts have meant fewer youth workers and social services to divert young people from gangs etc

I’m not sure youth clubs are the answer. I think there has been 16 teenage murders in London this year. Also thousands of other stabbings.
Perhaps if you are caught with a knife you should get a minimum 5 years. The courts find a reason not to send them to prison.
