Presume this is all leading up to some kind of money shot (apologies) aimed at Rishi?

He’s going to shit when he finds out about every other member of the party.

I suspect all politics is a bit like this behind the scenes - play ball if you want that funding for your local project.  Partly why decent people don't get into politics - too much unacceptable compromise.

"Pork barrel" has been a thing in a lot of places for a long time, yeah.

Speaking personally I wouldn't go near it all with a bargepole for the exact reasons stated here - but at the same time I know that outside the system it's often very difficult to get what needs to be done, done...even if it's both obvious and essential.

Highcross has gone into receivership.

If that does end up going down then you may as well board up the rest of the city centre in terms of retail too.

Unless I've been away for so long that there's something else keeping it going that I don't know about.

Cities are entering a death spiral, the sooner we start planning to turn all the buildings into vertical farms the better

I haven't lived in Leicester for several decades and rarely venture into the centre, but it seems the retail trade in the city is really struggling. I was saddened to read the other day that Wellgosh has closed down (I frequently patronised their Silver Arcade shop as a teenager in the 1990s). I also learned that Limeys apparently went some time ago. If retail really has become unviable in the centre of Leicester, it makes you wonder what will replace it. I suppose it will just become a residential and nightlife area with a few specialist shops here and there...

And the very last thing anyone ever says about Berry - well, anyone who’s ever met him - is that he’s decent people.

Hydroponics and other similar practices are the way forward, man. :)

It certainly seems that way, and it does make you wonder what the future holds in terms of it all. Perhaps the future is where cities aren't used for retail at all...

This is where as a society we need to decide if we want retail and a city centre or if we want to become a digital world. The only way for physical retail to compete with digital marketplaces is to subsidise physical stores or tax online sales or have an enforced delivery charge.

If buying online is more convenient and offers more choice and has no additional costs why would you take on the cost and effort to go to physical shops where they might not even have what you need.

The writing has been on the wall for a while.  The age of city centres as a retail destination is drawing to an end.

Shopping, across the nation, will be largely online with the exception of large retail parks that also contain leisure facilities on main arterial routes.

City centres will shrink to a few specialist shops and maybe butchers/greengrocers.

The proposal, if agreed will be phased in by 2030.

I'm lost for words.

64! Blimey. Allegedly, in next week's budget they may be announcing ours goes to 68 from mid 2030's instead of 2044.

(2040 would be OK ).
