Imagine billions of people not being just short of water, but actually with no access to it at all.

What then?

I have everything crossed that the answer to this perennial problem is the advancement of Solar energy supplying almost limitless fresh water through desalination.

Yes please don't worry, I work in finance so definitely realise the basics of fiscal rules.

Given this Govt is more Corbyn than anything Corbyn ever promised to do (to reiterate, they are literally paying your gas bills, right now), what do you think of them? What do you think is going to happen to public finances in the short-medium term?

I am not defending him, I did not vote for him, but it is clear you do not understand a jot of what is happening with UK public finances right now if you are still parroting the 'we could not have afforded it!!' line.

There is a big difference between managing a crisis as a result of external factors and making your own crisis as a basis of policy.  See Liz Truss' nightmare budget for a start.

Climate change?? Definitely yes, there is masses of regulation coming in from June onwards, get on board or go out of existence. Public bodies have dallied about with this problem for literally decades and gotten nowhere. The bigger question is a 'just' transition, no point putting in a framework to save the world if no one can afford it. Social issues are rightly gaining traction - as the saying goes - 'it's not all climate you know!!!'

I'll believe it when I see it to be honest, given the record of "markets" in the past on things that need to last beyond a few decades/human lifetime. Public bodies have been held up by those with short-term material self-interest corrupting the process, IMO.

But I guess we'll see - if it comes to it I just hope you're right. The stakes are pretty high.

Although @leicsmac will be glad to hear that I do think the climate change problem is influencing a lot of the direction of travel right now. And moreover it’s a significant enough problem that young people have lost a lot of faith in more traditional government because they aren’t seeing it get the needed results on the subject. That and housing availability I think are particular drivers right now in terms of movement toward the left and I do have sympathy with both.

People have lost faith in government clearly in bed with corporate power, rather than "traditional" government IMO (or are they one and the same?)

As per above, I guess we'll see where the future takes us.

I think @Line-X gave you a rundown on why desalination is a tricky business large-scale at best.

It's a potential solution, but it would be much better to arrange things so that the degree of scarcity that needs so much of it is never reached in the first place. Proactive, not reactive.

Meanwhile in common sense, Bravo Lord Coe, a huge step to protecting womens sport.

More on this:

"A working group will be set up to conduct further research into the transgender eligibility guidelines.

"We're not saying no forever," he said."

I think this is eminently sensible - take the "safer" path until we're sure one way or another about any advantages or disadvantages - and regardless of my own other viewpoints on this issue, we really don't know enough yet.

Now...on a similar tangent, how about comment on certain US states seeking to refuse any and all trans folks access to any and all "gender affirming care" and thus effectively legislating them out of existence, as I've mentioned a few times but seemingly been ignored because...I don't know, it's uncomfortable?

Some US states as ever going completely overboard to solve a problem, and likely due to a range of motivations, some of which are no doubt bigotry.  If you are an adult, have been assessed by medical professionals (ideally who will not financially benefit from the outcome) as being of sound mind, then you should be able to agree to any surgery you want ultimately.  With children this is a completely different question, and ANY medical action should be taken with extreme caution, especially now we know that puberty blockers have permanent lifelong effects.  I fully expect those who handed these out in the past decade to be sued into oblivion.

Right. So it's a case of yet, again, focusing on more than one problem at one time, and bigger priority problem (the former, in case that wasn't clear) is priority problem.

Regarding the use of puberty blockers, I think the Mayo Clinic does a pretty down-the-centre breakdown of them, if anyone is interested.

Don’t you mean potential compound?

Boom boom.

Before anyone says "stopping women from speaking" ... after the hatemonger left, several women took to the stage and were free to speak. :)

Have you seen the footage? It shows a large group of violent, misogynistic men trying to attack a woman. Do you really think that’s ok?

Of course he does.

Its okay when you disagree with the person being attacked.

Its the double standard that a good majority of “civilized” societies now accept.

Of course it isn't.

What is also not OK is the acts of violence against trans folks at a proportionally higher degree, sometimes even institutionalised as opposed to folks taking matters into their own hands.

Hopefully a solution might be found that helps with fundamental rights for all parties involved, involving cooler heads and less violence all round.

So I thought everyone here was moaning and whining about ‘not being allowed to discuss politics!!! Wahhh!!’ Turns out after my one day ban it’s an actual rule. Apologies and point duly noted!!

Not written in the guidelines, which read very much like Peter Walton defending a referee on BT sport lol, so how would you know?

Her strop is fantastic.

Yes KKK, it's the australian MPs calling you a nazi that made everyone think you're a nazi, not that your twitter profile has a barbie in an SS uniform as the profile picture, or the constant readings from Mein Kampf at your rallies, or these charming fellows with you in Victoria at the start of the week:

Members of the NSM perform the Nazi salute on the steps of Victorian parliament. Picture: NCA NewsWire / David Crosling
