Liverpool (A) - 30th Dec- Pre-match thread

Recommended Posts

Probably run the risk of forever trying to emulate that 1-0 win vs them but I'd play the midfield diamond and 2 up front vs them. I know their power is out wide but that's why we can then expose them with 2 up top and dominate the midfield, it's a risk but we're set for a pasting I'd imagine anyway.

Ward

Castagne

Amartey

Ndidi

Tielemans

Brendan Rodgers Pre-Match Press Conference vs Liverpool

Maddison?

“He won’t be available for the game. He was with Mark, our doctor, getting some specialist advice in London. I’ll wait to hear from them later on.”

Praet?

“He won’t be available either. He’s sore and struggling with his side. We’ll see on him next week.”

Newcastle?

“We were very disappointed with the performance. It was unlike what we ‘ve been. We’ve been strong and aggressive. 52 seconds into the game we made a mistake. It makes it difficult against a side high on confidence. We have to learn from it. If you look back at this time last year, we lost 6-3 at Man City and then beat Liverpool. That tells you everything about the mentality of the team. It was just so disappointing to start how we did. We’re now getting ready for another game.”

Liverpool?

“They’ve got the same identity, press and be aggressive. Those aspects you’ve seen over the past number of years. They want to score goals. Always a difficult game and nobody knows that more than myself. Challenges are there to be overcome.”

Gakpo?

“There’s been a lot of speculation around him for a while. He played off the side and through the middle against us. He clearly has an eye for goal. He’s got good speed. He may take time to adapt, but he’s certainly a good player.”

Transfers in early?

“We’ve had a period of time now to know what it is we need. Hopefully we can get that done sooner rather than later. That’s the plan. Hopefully that can take place early in the window.”

Dewsbury-Hall said 'spineless'?

“That’s the first I’ve heard that. There was disappointment. Having waited so long, we were all looking forward to the game. Our prep had gone really well. But the players were naturally disappointed. We were due to have a day off but we came in and assessed it. We now need to get ready and prepare for the game on Friday. They have pulled the season around and that feeling of what Kiernan said is an emotion after the game. They have so much heart. It was probably a reaction to the disappointment.”

Daka?

“Among his team-mates, he’s really respected. We see that. He’s a young player coming into a league with a totally different standard. We get everything from him. He creates the energy. He sometimes hasn’t got the goals he would have liked. I respect the work he puts in. He always wants to learn and be better. That will be the case.”

Ndidi?

“We’ve got a really busy schedule in January. I had a sit-down with him and an honest conversation with him. He has struggled with injuries. It’s sometimes coming away from the team and working on the training field. I can see his freshness. There’s no doubt over the coming weeks he will get opportunities.”

Maddison?

“England deemed him okay to train. He’s looked to do some work here and then felt a pain in a different part of the knee. He’s tried to do some work and he’s getting a pain. So the medical team have gone down to London to get another opinion on it from a specialist.”

Profiles of potential signings?

“Most of my teams have always had two wingers who are fast and can threaten the back-line. Left-back, we need somebody to come in, because we’ve only got Luke. We need more stature in the team. Clearly you need that at centre-half. The stature of the team we can increase. The power and speed in the front-line is clearly needed.”

Discussions with out-of-contract players?

“There’s been ongoing conversations with Soyuncu, Amartey, and Evans as well. We’ve been speaking to the representatives for a while.”

The same identity as who?

Have I misinterpreted this (Quite possibly)? Is he saying they've got the same identity as....us?

Why would;

a) Rodgers want Soyuncu to sign a new contract - he hates him?

b) Soyuncu want to sign a new contract after the way he's been treated?

Amartey I like but ultimately isn't good enough - The thinking in the summer was players would be out of contract come next summer, freeing up spaces, freeing up money, now like I say I like Amartey and think he's a valuable squad member but offering him a new contract also kind of contradicts the reasoning last summer.

Evans - He's done.

Very very odd, he's repeatedly said we've loads of players leaving in the summer and hopefully in January and yet he's then said a good chunk of them we want to sign new contracts. Doesn't make sense.

He wants a minimum of three new players in January and we supposedly needed loads of players to leave last summer as we couldn't name them all in the 25, surely that's still a consideration?

If he wants a CB and wants Soyuncu, Evans and Amartey to stay then one of those is going to be 5th choice??

The club is just keeping it's options open. We're obviously not going to re-sign all 3.

I read it as same profile as Newcastle, and I also read conversations regarding Amartey and Soyuncu as just that, not contract negotiations,  could be exit discussions, very unclear. :dunno:

Dont forget they lost to Watford last season and Forest this season so anything is possible.

It just depends which Leicester City team turns up.

you know what Leicester turns up, a Brendan team playing five at the back with no outlet who will concede two goals in the first ten minutes. Brendan then waits until 65 minutes before making a like for like substitution to no effect again.

Nunez and Salah

"much improved" says Brendan. Liverpool stroll it and we put up a bit more fight than the Newcastle game.

That was similar to last year where we did nothing and simply contained them to 2-0 and Brendan was “happy with the performance “. Only because it was on the back of the 4-1 defeat to Forest in the cup. Big similarities…

Faes' magical Belgian curls will imbue us all with an unholy finesse that defies logic, reason and physics and we'll coast to a three nil win. Scoff all you want but no one has a better explanation for our pre world cup form.

...while we cannot expect Faes to do everything,  we missed his leadership and attitude against Newcastle!!!

When you have someone playing with the energy and taking responsibility at the back, you feed off that, and it makes you feel better in yourself.

I just hope this was not performances to catch the eye of Martinez, pre World Cup, as opposed to him being the leader that I believe that he is.

We are the opposite of a team of bastards who are going to bully a team like liverpool.

Another loss, i'll be hoping no one below us has a good day either.:fc:

I've always wondered if Ndidi was one of the ones he was talking about in Feb about lacking hunger or desire. That DCM role has been split with so many players in recent months I just wonder if he trusts him anymore in terms of ability or desire. Frankly, if Soumare is ahead of him, Wilf should be worried. Even carrying an injury he should be owning that position.

Looking at the squad for this, how many fit first team players do we have available?

Goal Keepers

Ward

Iversen

defenders

Soyuncu

Amartey

vestergaard

Castagne

Thomas

Faes

Midfield

Barnes

Tielemans

Albrighton

KDH

Ndidi

Soumare

Mendy

Forwards

Daka

Perez

Vardy

Iheanacho

I make that 19, 2 of which are massively out of favour.

This doesn’t give us much wiggle room to adjust tactics or personnel.

Whatever we want to do, we will have a back 4 of Castagne Faes Amartey Thomas - this is particularly worrying with quite a hectic January coming up and no sign of any of the injured players being back any time soon.

Barnes will have to play on the left, Perez or Albrighton the only options on the right. KDH and Tielemans will play in midfield with one of Ndidi, Soumare or Mendy holding - the only position other than up front we have any genuine options.

Those that are travelling to this one after the Newcastle game…I have massive respect for.

But in all seriousness, this could be a horror show. Ward against top quality strikers, a team picking up form, our defence looking lost, unorganised, we have no bite in midfield, no aggression it’s going to be a very hard watch. Liverpool like to press and we can’t cope with that when an average team does it let alone a top side. Here’s hoping we catch them on a bad day.

The lack of aggression in the team has worried me for a while. We’re too soft as a team.

Might park in the centre and bus it in.

Any suggestions anyone?

Yep, sell your ticket, it's not going to be worth it and can only serve to depress or bore you for the new year 😁
