That is my worry, it is alll well and good when we are controlling things, but exorcising in the first half when countered we were actually weaker on his side. It is frustrating because we have better defenders

I agree. This is pretty much the same squad that lost to France, just with a much better Bellingham. I’m just unsure that a defence containing Maguire (and Pickford.. for me he’s always been too erratic) can win a major tournament

Pickford I have zero issues with, I hate picking on Maguire because he was a fix and did well for us but he isn’t the quality to bring England success. I can name 4 better options

Ultimately, the win is all that counts.

We just had a fantastic Nations League and quali for the World Cup (scoring 3 goals per game on average and incidentally putting 12 past minnow Moldova, who now have a legitimate shot at qualifying..  the mind boggles), only to crash out pitifully in the group stages.

The time we scraped by 2-1 in 2001 we went on to eliminate the defending World and European champions at the WC.

Not sure we can place too much importance on the qualification campaign.

I genuinely forgot about that 8-0 against Moldova. That’s what two kids and a terrible World Cup campaign do to you. Let’s hope we can finish the job with a good performance against Slovenia, but the feel-good factor around Hjulmand and the national team that blossomed during Euro 2020 seems to have completely evaporated. Granted, every game at Parken is a sellout but since Qatar, there seems to be a real lack of faith in Hjulmand and his team. Really hope we can reignite that spark and create that magic connection between the team and the fans. Summer 2021 was so special!

As good a player Maddison is he’s not a starter against the big teams.

He won’t get that slot off of Bellingham now, the other 2 midfielders are “holding” so doesn’t fit there and he’s not mobile enough to take 1 of the wide positions.

He’s a squad player for sure but most of his games might come against those lesser sides that park the bus where a specialist might be required to open the door.

It is interesting to see how the team has thoroughly lost it's way.

Whether this is down to the hangover from Qatar (which must have been a huge shock to the squad - they would, rightly, have expected to progress and maybe even make the latter stages of the tournament) or just a general decline in ability and belief is hard to say.

Mæhle has gone seriously off the boil. Højbjerg and Eriksen blow hot and cold and Skov Olsen is also very inconsistent.
Højlund is the only standout in an otherwise distinctly average Danish side.

But as mentioned, it's the results that count. We do in general tend to perform better in tournaments when we've been written off before it even starts.

Hoddle ( never enough games)

Gasgoine..never completed his legacy, fell off the bandwagon

Rooney…He kept a fair balance on the Pitch, but Englands major competitions

He was carrying (EO long S) too heavy knocks. Not solid teammates,

Or old soldiers to help him through.

Bellingham..only injury will hold him & England back..

Rashford/Foden, the 2 points completing the triangle.

Kane…with the above 3 complete his destiny, leave behind a strong legacy

Saka..can build on these 4.

Top Southgate era..??

Will that be enough to win a tournament Bert? If we slip up, it’ll be a defensive lapse. We’ll score for fun with this attacking talent, but we could concede too many

It’s a collective isn’t it. But let’s take our scapegoat glasses off for a minute and be honest that Maguire’s performances for England are more good than bad. We were crying out for him to be selected when he played for us. Let’s not forget we are currently without a specialist left back as well, which we won’t be come June.

Rooney.

If we are talking Bellingham, he is just more zidane and Iniesta plus I feel he isn’t going to shag around and booze it up… so has the messi and Ronaldo style . He will win multiple ballon D’ors in my view. Plus his club Real Madrid although forced with no striker still rely on him to fill in at top, shows you why they paid the money for him. Otherwise he would be more like he was for England tonight, not in the goals, but causing trouble still. So yes Real Madrid have been forced and it’s paid off for Madrid to be getting that forward and doing the job. The combination with someone like Bellingham behind a player like Kane was beautiful, that is what Madrid want again like zidane and raul

I would never have guessed sorry

Sorry, just bored of the negatively around England when actually this is the first time things have moved forward since 60’s… no players hating on each, arguing or whatever  or even unwilling to pass because they play for certain teams

It's funny, I'd seen quite a bit of Bellingham at Dortmund(and with England) and had wondered if the move to Real at 20 was a bit too soon.

I'm generally not right on this sort of stuff lol

Indeed, they paid 100m and mostly at Madrid they get it right. Your opinion wasted involved so the coaches and staff saw a special player, let’s be honest even at Dortmund he was phenomenal though.

Bellingham is getting the goals because Madrid trust him and fill in for that Kane or benzema player… You will see tonight Bellingham’s genius is playing behind such a player. Madrid would rather get Kane and have Bellingham breaking the middle and controlling the game.

Loved him at Dortmund, but certainly didn't expect the offensive side of his game that he's shown already.

Always a worry when you go to a team that has so many great players(Modric, Valverde, Kroos and the 2 young French kids) that if you don't perform right away, you'll be riding the bench and that will affect uour confidence.

Confidence with Jude doesn't seem like a problem, which is a welcome sign for an English player.

I’m being honest, he is zidane… got it all, yes he has been used more forward at Madrid, but I think tonight against Italy he is the man, like zidane

When you are running past all the team against a side like Napoli, you get appreciated by the Real Madrid fans

My issue with Maguire is that he’s fine at this stage in the season, had some minutes for club, not looking rusty. But by the time we get to next summer and tournament time he’ll be going in to huge games having made about 10 starts.

It’ll be the same for a few of them (Phillips for example) that’s when it comes unstuck, when they come up against someone who has had an incredible season and is running on adrenaline.

More times than not he’s solid for England.

I don't think he's had a period, game wise of ever letting England down.

Some fans love nothing other than  to chase down recent/ex players runs of poor form.. Maguire has always been a decent CB, Stones had to grow into it.

Southgates present period, like to see those new generation names, get more decent game time, to see first

#injuries we need played in cover

# To see simply if anyone new  comes along   if thy are better or also a good player that fits into the squad...

## Southgate has always shown

      willing to introduce new faces

      & prepared to play them..

##> Accusation of keeping to old guard

        Routine, incorrect & unfair..

        Only Henderson, Pickford, Walker,

        Come under that umbrella..

And that belongs to MoO, not a

         Distractual issue.

## like all managers tenure, come the

       odd considered exceptional players

       Last off the Rank.. Bellingham,

Saka, SG hasnt vierd from their

        inclusion, where some managers

         in the past would of.
