Might have helped if his team mates could have played a simple one two a bit more consistently. For some reason, I still see major flaws in his game though. I think we will undoubtedly miss his goal contributions, but I am also looking forward to having some different wingers join this summer, hopefully ones who can deliver a cross and beat a man. Also don't forget, he's only now 25. We've had 5 years to replace Mahrez with a player even half as good and not managed it. If we were linked to buy a player with his kind of numbers, we would all be salivating at the prospect. That's a very good strike rate for a winger. If he were pulling those kind of stats and also offering a solid 8/10 performance in all other aspects of his game every week, he'd have left us several years ago. We know as well as any club how difficult it can be to replace a talented winger who leaves, so it's surprising that so many of our fans fail to comprehend how valuable he is to us. When we had Lookman who would take over the left side if Barnes was not available, we looked even better. He wa a lot more attacking, taking up very good positions and generally being a better option than Barnes. Rodgers had little interest in the right-side, so long as he could put a block on that side then he was happy. Put a competent manager, who understands the use of wingers and you will get a more balanced team. There is a lot of players out there who could fulfill the brief. Popular Post honeybradger Posted 20 June 2023 Popular Post Share Posted 20 June 2023 I think if you compare Barnes to someone like Grealish then you begin to understand what makes a great player and why Barnes is no where near that bracket. Barnes has 13 goals and 2 assists and Grealish has 5 goals 7 assists in the league, so if you just go by statistics then Barnes is the superior player. If you watch the two of those play then anyone with a pair of eyes would say Grealish is better at football. In a side like ours who already have a weak back 4, having a winger who doesnt track back is a death sentence. Yes Barnes has scored 13 goals but if we had a winger like albrighton playing in Barnes's position we probably score 15 less goals as a team but end up on more points by grinding out wins with some clean sheets. Realistically 30 mil is a fair price for a player like Barnes who is great at scoring goals but weak at everything else, if we can get 40 mil for him we can replace him with someone who score less but holds onto the ball better and tracks back (someone who most would say is a worse player than Barnes) and stay at the same level or perhaps even improve as a team, with money to spend on other players. At the end of the day what we want to do is make ourselves into the best team possible, not a collection of the best players we can collect put into a starting XI, which is what we ended up with last season. 8 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
