Development/Youth Squads 2023/2024 Thread - U18/U21

Very surprised how highly Deniche Hill was scored by SofaScore, thought he really struggled tonight and Wigan definitely targeted our left side, as shown by how poorly Wilson-Brown did as well

Ratings for Wanya and Richards are right though, definitely our 2 best players on the night

The worrying thing about tonight was that Wigan looked awful and some how put 7 past us! That defence was probably the worst collectivly I've seen in a while. The only bit of quality on the whole pitch was Marcel who looked a cut above everyone else, including all the Wigan players.

Ive personally thought hes shocking since hes been here. Looks so uncomfortable on the ball and completely clueless when it comes to positional awareness. If he wasnt built like a brick shithouse at the age he is then he’d be in a different career right now. That Bobby Amartey is the same

Despite that dreadful performance, I’d like to think there is no reason Armani Richards shouldn’t be around the first team now. Done everything asked of him in terrible u18/u21 sides playing haram ball. If not I think he will be off next year.

is there some reason for wanya being banished back to the u21?

Went to the game and other than Wanya, can't say anyone looked like they would be anywhere near our first team. Whilst Wigan played a strong side, it's worth remembering that most of their squad were also 21 or under. The guy sat next to me said that 9 of the 11 Wigan players that finished the game were 21 or under. Richards looked OK and was and got a bit of harsh treatment from the ref at times. Wanya was the best player on the pitch by a distance and is far too good to be playing academy football.

Richards will make it at League One level at a bare minimum. So much muck available at the minute. Mirsad Ali the one I'm expecting to kick on but think we need a shake up.

I don't think it was quite that young

The 11 they started with did had 4 players 21 or under (21, 20, 19, 19) but also had players who were 22, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 33

Even after their 4 subs and not including the two 30+ players they used the average ages of the 11 they started with and of the 11 they finished with was still a couple of years above ours

From watching it I thought we actually competed quite well against their first half side and deserved to go in drawing 1-1 as well

I do agree though that other than Wanya (and Richards) the rest of them looked very poor and I can't see any of them anywhere near our first team either

If by “shake up” you mean fire Ben Petty to the f*****g moon, then yeah, I think you might be right mate..

In the meantime, does anyone know who the Academy Director might be..? Could be a useful place to start pointing fingers when trying to identify just how we’ve become so utterly f*****g shambolic from top to bottom as an organisation. Everything the man touches turns to utter dog mess.

Generous ratings. I think only Wanya and Richards are accurate, the rest could have at least a point taken off. The defence and keeper especially were poor apart from one save Jones made in the first half.

Wigan Defeat For City's Under-21s
LCFC MEN U21S
Published 11 hrs 3 mins ago
1 MinuteReading time
Leicester City's Development Squad fell to a 7-1 EFL Trophy defeat at Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening.
The young Foxes opened their EFL Trophy campaign against the Sky Bet League 1 side at DW Stadium and held their own during the first 45 minutes against senior opposition.

The visitors took the lead when midfielder Arjan Raikhy netted half an hour in, but experienced forward Josh Magennis levelled the scores via the penalty spot just four minutes later.

Level at the break, Northern Ireland international Magennis doubled his tally less than 60 seconds after the interval, putting the Latics ahead for the first time in the game.

From there, it was one way traffic. Callum Lang made it 3-1 on 57 minutes and an unfortunate Brad Young own goal increased the advantage on the hour mark, saving Magennis' header before it rebounded off the post and into the net.

Harry McHugh then added another for the home side, before Chris Sze netted late on. Josh Stones rounded off the scoring in stoppage-time, to compound the Foxes' misery.

City still have two games to play in the group stage and will come up against Fleetwood Town and Tranmere Rovers in Northern Group D.

Next up in Premier League 2, meanwhile, is a home fixture against Middlesbrough at LCFC Training Ground on Monday (7pm BST kick-off).

The details

City: Young, Appiah, Godsmark-Ford (Amartey 62'), Wilson-Brown; Aluko, Raikhy, Cover (Cartwright 77'), Hill (Ali 67'); Marçal (c) , S. Thomas (Pennant 78'), Richards (Maswanhise 67').

Unused subs: Doherty, R. Evans.

Goal: Raikhy 30'.

Leicester: Maresca could replace Vardy with a sensational academy star
BY
TOM GRIFFIN
PUBLISHED 15 HOURS AGO
Leicester City could have found their next gem from their academy.

Leicester City may have strengthened well this summer as they gear up for a charge towards promotion, but their most impressive investment was improving the infrastructure of their academy.

In 2020, the Foxes unveiled their stunning £100m training complex, boasting 21 training areas, 14 full-size training pitches and a 499-seater pitch for youth team matches.

The purpose of this investment is to discover the biggest young talents and unearth the next Ben Chilwell, Harvey Barnes and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who are the most successful graduates from the academy in recent years, with the former two earning big money moves to Chelsea and Newcastle while Dewsbury-Hall is currently a vital cog in Enzo Maresca's winning machine.

Kasey McAteer was the latest academy star to burst onto the scene this season, becoming a revelation down the right wing for the Foxes, scoring three goals in four Championship appearances.

While McAteer is now one of the most exciting young prospects in the second tier, there is another who is looking to follow in his footsteps and that is forward Amani Richards.

Who is Amani Richards?
Richards may be just 18-years-old, but he is already making a name for himself in the Midlands for his impressive attacking displays in the youth sides.

The highly-rated youngster was poached from Arsenal's youth academy in January 2022 and the Gunners could live to rue the decision to let him go.

Operating down the right flank or as a striker, Richards became one of the most tantalising young prospects in the U18s setup, chalking up an eye-watering 24 goal contributions in 36 appearances and has since translated that form into the U2's after making the step-up this season.

He even came back to haunt his old club in their U18 meeting with Arsenal in March, scoring both goals for the Foxes in a 2-1 win as scouts from Newcastle and Brentford gazed their eyes on the sensational teen, and would have been in awe of his talents.

The teenage prodigy is garnering attention from a whole host of clubs and that attention is only going to be heightened after beginning his U21 campaign with one goal and three assists in his first four appearances.

With Leicester keen to extend his contract which currently expires in 2024, he's a player they can ill afford to let go given the high ceiling he possesses.

Who could Richards replace at Leicester?
Leicester's attacking output has largely come from wide areas this season with wingers McAteer and Stephy Mavididi scoring five goals between them, shouldering the responsibility in place of the misfiring Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho.

While Vardy opened the scoring against Southampton inside 21 seconds, that was his first Championship goal of the season and with the Englishman seeing his output decline rapidly in recent years, Maresca will need someone to replace him in the near future.

The 36-year-old only mustered up three goals in the top flight last term, which is a barometer for how quickly he's dropped from the peak of his powers, having reached double digits for goals in eight of the last nine seasons prior, winning the Golden Boot in the 2019/20 season.

With Vardy reaching the tail end of his career, someone has to deliver consistent returns in his place and as evidenced by the performances of Iheanacho this season, he isn't likely to produce the goals that Leicester need.

Instead, Maresca could turn to his academy and unearth the exciting and skilful Richards, providing his side with the baptism of fire they need in a similar vein to McAteer.
