One saving grace is I like this marginally better than a move for Tom Cairney

Exact opposite for me. Just judging both players, Winks is better, but Cairney would be cheaper (wages and fee) and come with championship promotion experience

£4m fee?

If that’s true then we are covering his PL salary of 60k next season

it’s swings and roundabouts

from an ffp basis I would think there is little difference paying a larger fee which can be amortised over the length of his deal rather than a million quid extra on his wages on  year one

He will be good for us - better than 90% of the CM in the championship

When we won League One in 2008/09, it felt like we had the division's best player in each position on the pitch, more or less. Even in the one or two positions where we didn't have the best player (we might have had room for one or two Leeds players that season, for example), we had the 2nd or 3rd best players. If you ensure your team has among the best players in most positions on the pitch, a good manager will get you promoted. Winks would be one of the best players in his position in the Championship, which is presumably why we're targeting him.

People would just rather sign players they know nothing about. If it was an unknown 27 year old from Italy or Spain there would be different opinions.

If there is a mixture of 'types' of signings then I'm fine with that. Core of solid professionals, some young prospects and a couple of wildcards.

...the problem would be that people would have seen him (Winks) play, and have little faith in what he brings to the table!!!

The 27-year-old from overseas would receive just as many cries of derision, due to being an unknown and his performance record in his last season.

There is a certain type of player that we are going to be looking to recruit, to play for Moresca, and it may not be quite what this club has envisaged. Watching a group of technical players, probing a defence to break them down, may not be the most exciting thing that many had envisaged.

Did you just seriously, unironically, use FUT cards for player comparisons?

I prefer to use heavy duty things like StatsBomb and FBRef. However, FIFA is a good way to present things to younger audiences. FUT uses real data as a base and although they are creative with the truth, the underlying fundamentals aren’t ridiculous.

It’s time to embrace new thinking and new ways of doing things, just like our new manager!

We are in the Championship , 18 y.o. lightweight kids spotted on You Tube or some phony football stats site will be of no use whatsoever. We have our academy kids for that job. We need experience and physical presence for what will be a formidable battle.

Exactly, Man City U21s cannot even win the papa johns trophy so a team full of 18/19 years olds is not the answer against Men in the championship.
