Signing Mahrez would not have been possible post Brexit

Recommended Posts

Interesting article in The Telegraph about the benefits of being able to buy two players in South America and Africa as ‘wildcards’ post Brexit. Balanced against how the post Brexit landscape would have also made it impossible for us to sign Mahrez as we did from Le Havre before we exited.

In the long run will this move perhaps re-strengthen continental European clubs at the cost of British clubs? The Telegraph article paints Brexit as a positive game changer. Not sure myself. Overseas players are often eligible for European clubs. Plenty of Brazilians have Italian ancestry for example.

Even with the more relaxed work permits now, you also have to consider players who moved to academies with their parents, or whose parents moved when they were young.

Like would Jeff Schlupp's parents have been able to move to the UK on their German passports if we weren't in the EU at the time? Only really if they had quite specialist jobs.

Or would Kasper Schmeichel or Ritchie De Laet have been able to be picked up by ManUtd's and ManCity's youth team at such a young age on their Danish and Belgian passports? These type of players likely will move at young ages to the big clubs in Italy, Germany, France or Spain instead of England nowadays and then likely adapt to those youth systems and less likely to move to the Championship.

Several of our promotion winning team in 2013/14 probably wouldn't have been at the club.

One thought that has always excited me, especially with the potential of the academy we have is if there was a massive change to the game in which teams could only have local players born or with a family link to the county. We’ll never see it of course but one thing I am looking forward to in The Championship is potentially seeing KDH, Thomas, Hamza, Alves and other local lads playing for the first team. Like Yorkshire cricket used to be? You had to be a  Yorkshire man to play for them back in the day. There’s an extra satisfaction in seeing ‘your own’ in the team. What a shake up for the game that would be. It would end the rich six and state ownership for one.

Would it end rich six though? The top clubs have all resources and attraction even at that level. They all probably have players that are better than players at other academies.

When we lost to Liverpool 3-0 their goalscorers (Jones and Trent) were both local and from their academy.

The most successful team of the PL era (Manchester United) have had a large proportion of local players, generally more under Fergie but even now there is talk of Rashford becoming their highest paid player.

Meanwhile we've got Thomas, Hamza and Dewsbury-Hall. Massive difference of quality.

Potentially more so than FFP. Only being able to field players from or with a link to your county could do a heck of a lot to make the game more of an even field. It would also inject more passion into the game. As it would literally be our lot v theirs.

Yeah but they'd still have better players than the rest, that was my point.

We've got Thomas, Liverpool have got Trent.

We've got Dewsbury Hall, Man City have got Foden.

I take your point. It’s great each club have all got those players. Fans have the strongest bonds with them. Would love to see more.

Tbh so would I but not just for the sake of it, they've got to have a bit of quality. I don't particularly rate our current local players highly.

Let’s hope Alves makes a full recovery and reaches his full potential for us.

Surely this is because of the way we have set the laws / qualification up it's not as if EU is stopping us.

Likewise its because we have changed the criteria that we can now bring in South Americans.

Or have I misinterpreted it.

It’s the freedom of movement thing. We no longer have it with the EU - for good or bad. We can no longer raid European leagues or academies for unproven talent like Mahrez or Kanté. We can however get two wildcards on unproven talent from South America or Africa for example.

The other crap thing is that any decent player we bring through our state of the art academy now will be snapped up before we get benefit.

Worst of all worlds. Also forest will get all the regional talent now they're in the premier league instead of us.

We’ll soon swap places.

Surely it's still us stopping them coming here, The EU can stop Brits going to the EU but I can't see that the EU can stop people from the EU coming here to work

More like a dead end!!

It literally is now. We can no longer sign players like Mahrez or Kanté via a route that was previously open to us. The wildcard route has opened up though. Not sure they balance each other out though. Telegraph seems to think it’s a positive.
