Tactics Under Maresca

Awful tactics second half and subs tonight.

2nd half was poor before the subs, but they made it even worse with the subs.  A learning experience for Enzo, lets hope he learns from it, taking of your attacking outlet fails more than it works in narrow leads.

The failure was not killing Ipswich by HT, as we know they finish games strongly.

Mads passing it out lost the ball more than 10 times in a danger area, and a few of those were close to goal scoring chances.

We have four games in nine days- huge risk of injuries. Subs didn't work but we can't keep the same eleven on each time.

And as we saw with Leeds today, 3 points against bottom of the league is the same as 3 points against second in the league. Its fine.

I imagine some people would have preferred we left them on

But then I expect they would also be moaning at Enzo for using them too much if they get muscle injuries in this busy run

You manage their minutes in a way that allows you to play your strongest side for the full 90 in your biggest game during the busy period if needed. If they needed to come off today then the failings were in the last couple of games leading up to today.

Don’t want to see any major overreactions, it was an absolute fluke of an og which prevented what would’ve been classed as a great defensive victory.

It's a complacency we can't ignore though. Gave it away against Sheffield Wednesday too and almost blew it vs Millwall and Birmingham.

We have to put games to bed before we get comfortable

taking the players off wasn't the issue it was the choice or replacement, Cannon coming on may have made the others work but Nacho being a lazy **** counting the days until he can leave cost us that game as it removed our attacking thrust.

The goal itself was a fluke but it had been coming for ages

We didn’t almost blow it against Millwall and Birmingham though. They didn’t come close to equalisers. As Enzo says, this is not play station, it’s a tough league. Dropping points away to second is not a disaster, even if we’re all disappointed with the ending.

And you can also change more than just the players. You don’t have to keep the system the same every minute of the game.

Fine Maresca has his way but the fact people just accept it has to be this way every single minute of the season. Cost us against Leeds, cost us today, could easily have cost us against Birmingham.

It’s not ideal but sit Choudhury in alongside Winks, keep Fatawu narrow up the pitch, drag Ricardo wide and have Choudhury police their left 8 space. Get a left back on, play a flat back four. Get us keeping the ball better and have something on the break.

The thread title is misleading, it suggests there’s a plural.

Who else do we have?

Can't run the likes of KDH and Ndidi into the ground.

Just looked leggy.

React to the game for starters.

KDH was clearly leggy as you say but not realising that we’re losing the battles/energy in the middle of the park and solidifying that with Hamza over Akgun was a decision Rodgers was making when he had checked out.

Poor squad management. He should of rotated more against Rotherham.

Those 2 should not be taken off in a game like that. Cost us 2 points

What if we had then dropped points against Rotherham like we did against Sheff Wed because we rotated a lot?

The subs did not cost us 2 points - it was the ridiculous amount of luck Ipswich got with 2 massive deflections on a crap shot that dropped us 2 points

Look forward to Strider’s comments.

The subs were bad but what actually hurt us was how Ipswich got Chaplin into the game.

We were happy to allow Chaplin to be dealt with by the defence. However this left plenty of opportunities to isolate Vestergaard and create big gaps in the back line. They could play off Chaplin exploit the space and leave Vestergaard behind.

Normally of course, Faes would the aggressor to pick up the no.10 or Chaplin and has a yard of pace to make up on the retreat.

Just shows the players aren’t quite available to do what Enzo wants. Also we don’t have the player profile to switch into a double sixes style with an outright no.10.

Alongside this, Harness wanders from his left flank so Ricardo kept getting dragging into the midfield and Fatawu ended up at RB area a lot. Created a bit of imbalance. Fair play from McKenna, little bit of innovation to try and take advantage of the inverted full back.
