Tactics Under Maresca

When has it ever happened that a keeper has needed to be subbed twice in a game? Its less than 1 in 1000. On the flip side why take the risk only having 1 attacking player on the bench when you are two injuries away from not having enough on the pitch?

Two keepers.

Two defenders.

Three midfielders.

Two attackers.

Simple.

I know (and said) that you're almost certainly never going to need them. But seeing as you can have seven other players on the bench, why not just be ready for the one time in a thousand that you need three keepers in a match?

Most of the negativity is from people that are just stuck in 2021, football like life moves on. I like his attitude what he's trying to do, it will take time to implement, and like others have said he doesn't have all the tools to do the job fully, but if we can just keep picking up wins, when the window closes it focuses minds. If Daka and Castagne are not in the squad in September if we don't sell them, that for me is cutting off your nose to spite your face. He's used Praet a bit, I don't think he will be using Thomas or Kristiansen at all, I do think Souttar could offer something especially with Coady now injured, but time will tell what the remaining days of August brings in the way of transfers in/out.

he is trying to run his restaurant with McDonalds employees

we need to give him time and space to develop his philosophy and team

He is a man who has Lady Luck on his side and that’s valuable

How have we been lucky? We have had the most shots, highest possession and most shots on target in all 3 games so far.

Long ball innit.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying that phrase and they’re a beauty to witness.

He did, as did others but atleast it’s while trying to get out, go forward as opposed to what were doing camped on our own 18 yard box, not going past the half way line or getting out, being “too casual” or “causing our own problems.”

I have no issues with anyone getting caught in possession when they’re going forward and having a go.

I feel like your posts take on a very similar tone to the one you were calling Tom Collomese (Daily Mail) out for the other week lol

I do see your point but with how unbalanced the squad currently is and statistically speaking attacking subs change games more often than defensive ones and even more so than goalkeeping ones why would you leave yourself short in the more likely scenario of needing to chase the game?

He’s clearly a very clever bloke but no other manager willingly sticks 2 keepers on the bench not even Pep.

This is a better start to the season than I expected. Every game so far there have been glimpses of what we are trying to achieve. Winning 3 league games on the bounce is a bonus whilst in transition. I don't mind the slow build up at times as I feel it is Maresca's way of saying 'Have faith with the process' For those who think promotion would be easy, just like any league, it has to be earned. I like the attitude of the players and they seem much fitter. If things aren't going to plan in games I still feel confident they will find a way to turn things around.

This seems like the most crazy argument.
It only takes an injury in first minute for a striker where your down to the one striker and if your losing or drawing in the game you don’t have any more strikers because you have your extra keeper on the bench.

Makes no sense other than get lost all of you go and find another club, which we can do without leaving them off the bench

Do you not think that goalkeeper is a slightly more specialist position than striker? I know which of the two I'd rather have a midfielder have a go at doing for half a match in an emergency.

tbh the main point is that the lack of strikers on the bench is just as much because it's full of defenders and midfielders as because there are two keepers sat on it.

I don't think Ward would play even if there were 2 goalkeeping injuries, we'd be throwing Hamza in the sticks, better with his feet and more of an aggressive streak.

The idea of this is literally to bait out a team that want to sit deep and create the space behind them.

The thing is though, there were a couple of occasions this afternoon, when we won the ball in our half, and they had committed players forward and left themselves exposed to a quick counter attack, and we just didn't move the ball quick enough, and let their players all get back behind the ball again.

I don't believe for one minute that's what Enzo wants them to do, but it has definitely got to be worked on, and in such opportunities, we need to be sharper, and pass the ball quicker and with purpose.

Ultimately, we are still very much a work in progress, and winning the games at such a time is a welcome bonus.

I get the tactics ....but why take two of the best players off?

The two wingers are sub standard. But were kept on for the sake of the system.

Wilf and Kels were light years ahead of anyone on their team het hey subbed off.

Fair play to Wilf today. Thought he was excellent. Defensive Midfield collapsed after he went off. It was, frankly, a dreadful decision to hook him

Don’t disagree with this at all. We definitely could have been quicker in transition at times, especially when we’ve pulled them out of shape.

You can’t change formation and bring 2 gks on if you’re 2-0 down (well I suppose you can but pointless )

Alfred the great apparently spent 28 days trying to work out the theology of luck. Positively I don’t care if we nick every game with a lucky margin or finish. It’s early days, team is coming together with totally new style and tactics all with a squad that is not a final product, probably far from his desired. I think to that, we can fair play EM and the squad should get some credit.

Going to take more that 6 weeks with Enzo to rid the side of the Rodgers safety football. The 1st half was very encouraging to be honest, that was a serious block from Cardiff and I doubt we’ll see many do it better this season and will still created chances.

Could also do with the fans not shitting the bed when we’re playing out of tight spaces at the back.

Weird decision or not, it worked. The two guys that replaced them were the two guys involved in the winner.

I thought Ndidi played well too, and definitely helped win the ball back. He was unlucky to be dragged off, but was always going to be, to give Casadei 30 minutes. Personally i would probably have took KDH off, who didn't have one of his better games, but I suppose you then lose the energy he gives.
