He does some things well

He symbolises our decline.  I have never as a fan bought into him

When he's gone, I won't miss him

If Vestergaard symbolises our decline, then what does Danny Ward symbolise?

Pretty certain he is mentioned in the Necronomicon :colder:

Don’t trick yourselves. Playing deep in a back 3.

Not overly sustainable in the long run and a sad point how Denmark have regressed from being a really canny opponent to bus ball until their next crop comes through

Am I missing irony here? If not - Denmark played with a back 4, very aggressive and constantly playing the ball forward. Cut through the Portuguese like a knife through warm butter

He can't do anything. What are his actual strengths?

Can't run, has no pace, can't win headers (despite his height), isn't strong enough.

He is an absolute shit defender and I can't believe people still post positively about him.

In a setup like Denmark’s last night he anticipates the game very well

Incompetence

However, Ward was here in better times.  He was fine as a number 2 as long as he didn't have to play.  I suspect he is much better in  training than when playing. His poor decision making makes it look like his mind blocks his view of the ball

Vestegaard arrived under Rodgers who didn't seem to rate him.  He seemed like a squad blocker from the start.

In time, Vestegaard proved himself to be a Championship player

You didn't watch the game, obviously. As FoxyDK mentioned, he played in a back four. Vestergaard was playing in a team the went to the Euro semis four years ago, so if that's regression, bring me more please!

The game plan under Riemer is to press hard from the front. Jannik won the ball in the final third(!) on a few occasions, had decent attempts at goal, vital clearances and interceptions, played through balls and successfully carried the ball Maguire-style. Everything you could ask for really.

I didn't watch the game but looking at stats alone it looked to me that Denmark were more on the front foot with 23/9 shots to Portugal's 8/2 with 1 of those 2 shots 'on target' for Portugal coming in the 90+ minute, sounds to me that Vestergaard didn't have much 'defending' to do & people getting carried away like last season with his ability to sit on the h/way line putting the odd good ball in because the opposition didn't pose much of a threat.

As i say i didn't watch the game so unless someone tells me that he was like a lion smashing in tackles, perfectly shepherding forwards down blind alleys, leaping majestically to head out every high ball  whilst taking full control & marshaling his backline colleagues like Franco Baresi i won't believe he's anything other than a number on a team sheet & will look past the comments of "Vestergaard down as MotM for me so far..." etc that i have seen.

You've exposed yourself a bit here. You're really just saying that you've made your mind up and dismissing what was a good performance. I'll refer to the paragraph above. I haven't looked up his personal stats of the game, but I'm sure it would reflect the impression I got.

Certainly, the game stats you bring up doesn't tell the story of how involved he was in pressing high, winning duels and progressing the ball. All part of modern 'defending'.

Yes I find it strange that they still pick Kasper to be fair. Similar to Portugal still picking Ronaldo and us picking the likes of Henderson in the squad. Surely at some point you'd think these teams would start using younger players.

As long as Kasper performs, I'll have no complaints. However, I think Hermansen will fit right in from a playing style perspective under Riemer.

We (Denmark NT) have a tendency to stick to our goalkeepers for a little too long - even Kasper didn't get his break until he was 24 I think - so by this point it's basically tradition.

People saying they'd rather play Vestegaard than Faes. I'd rather play with 10 men than have either one of them who clearly don't care about the club.

With him seemly frozen out of matchday squads by yet another manager can we now agree that the issue is his inabilities & not the manager that “doesn’t play to his strengths” (still not sure what they are).

I would imagine that even Enzo would have dropped him in the premier Lge after 5 or 6 drubbings, the man needs to go and play abroad now.

I doubt he'll go to the Saudi's while still being picked for Denmark.

Obviously wants to protect his International reputation.

Has more chance of playing for 🇩🇰 if playing no matter where it is.

Hopefully he’s been told by this regime that he won’t be involved again, trouble is this regime probably not going to be making the calls next season, fingers crossed the next make that call quickly.

Things change, people priorities change.

And what has changed with him that now means he’ll want to go to Saudi? He’s got another 2 years on probably lottery winning money that he’d get nowhere else apart from Saudi and he doesn’t have to be any good to ‘earn’ it. He’s here until his contract ends

I will give you 3 games tops where I thought fair play he’s done well today, as in he’s defended well doing CB defending things.
Outside of that it was the league’s standard that might have made him look better than he was/is, being given 5mins to walk to the halfway line and ping a few balls left and right because the opposition are so scared of being turned over doesn’t go down as a + for him in my book. It’s not even like these passes led directly to goals which they do for players like VVD who are/were afforded the same time especially in the Klopp era.

I honestly think this is it for him now at Leicester even if RVN is booted, why would a manager (or new board) just stick with the same model that they know can’t work if promoted just to get promoted, any sane thinking (and we hope there will be a change) will be to assemble a team that only requires a small amount of tweaking & quality added if promoted and not a blank sheet again.

Hopefully he will be told by whoever, stay and draw you money but your not in my thoughts which will lead him to actively look for something abroad (again I think he is done in England) if he refuses then nothing we can do except keep him away from the 1st team and let him walk his dog around the golf course.

I know I bumped the thread but just seeing his name makes my teeth itch, as do a few others in the squad.

Mavididi & Winks, I wasn’t convinced of Mavi making it when we were in the championship but he’s good enough for a low end premier team, we should have used him more for nothing other than his pace, as for Winks he’d probably make it in more teams than he wouldn’t in the premier league.
