Enzo Maresca Pre-Match Press Conference vs Liverpool

 

Doyle?

“Unfortunately, it’s not good. Expecting him a long time out. We don’t know exactly how long. When you play football, you know these kinds of things can happen. It's his first important injury. Sunderland played all the games, Coventry played all the games.”
 

Other injuries?

“No other injuries.”
 

Right time to use Coady?

“Yeah. Not because it’s his former club. As I said already, after eight or nine weeks out, he needs to come back slowly. Probably tomorrow could be the right game for him.”
 

First 10 games?

“Happy in general. Happy with all of them. They are willing to learn and to have an open mind. They way they are getting better game by game, I’m very happy about this. I think we are in the right position now. There are many things we need to improve. But we are happy with where we are now.”
 

Liverpool?

“They have some new players but in transition and off the ball, they are the best team in the past five years in the world. Now, even if they have some new players, they need time to adapt, and then they go again.”
 

Doyle?

“They are doing some checks. They just said to me that it could be a long time.”

“I don’t know if it’s the worst scenario for us. Probably the only position where we have just one is Callum. We’re going to find a solution.”

 

Justin?

“Yeah, he played already twice in the cup. He played against Norwich but on the right side. We tried him on the left side and he was quite good. He could be one of the options for us.”
 

Carabao Cup?

“It’s an important competition for sure. Against Liverpool away, it’s a good environment. We have many games. After Liverpool, we go again.”
 

Only one defeat?

“Last night a big manager said the more you win, the more close a defeat is. We are doing well, but we cannot lose focus. After 10 games, we are in the right position in terms of the way we are improving. That’s important.”
 

Best thing so far?

“For sure, the way they are improving. The only thing we judge are the results, but we need to analyse more things. The way we are playing and improving, and one of the last games, against Norwich, it was the youngest first 11 in the last 10 years for Leicester. We are trying to change things.”
 

Conscious choice to make team younger?

“When you make some changes, you need to refresh and most of the time they are young profiles. But at the same time, we need players with experience like Jamie, Marc, Conor, Jannik.”
 

Learning about yourself?

“Every game is a challenge. All teams are different. The way we try to build, we have to modify and add new things each game. Everything we do is dynamic. We don’t just do this and stop. We add things. This is the beauty of my job.”

 

Winks?

“For me, I don’t have any doubt Harry Winks could be a good player for the national team. For sure he is an unbelievable player. He’s working fantastic. He has the level to be at the top.”
 

Changes?

“For sure we are going to make changes. We have more players we are using. They deserve it. We cannot play every game with the same 11. We need to refresh and consider Blackburn.”
 

Excited?

“A lot. It’s Liverpool. I tried to study Klopp because of the way they work off the ball and the way they defended. Excited for sure.”
 

Teach your team what it takes to be a Premier League club?

“We are not Premier League, so we don’t need to be at Premier League level. We are a Championship club. But against Liverpool we need something extra.”

Still leaves you without someone comfortable on the left in the 3, in possession.

It’s funny as most of us would say he’s always looked better on the left when playing. Doesn’t seem to defend as well at RB for me can’t understand why.

Yeah I thought it was odd of him to say that. For me JJ is the left sider, he's improved two games when coming on in that position for me. Seems an obvious like for like.

I guess the wory is his own fitness, if we lose him too we're really stuffed.

A couple of reasons why all the managers from the Pep stable want a left sided CB:

  • Can play the ball first time down the line to beat the press.
  • Don't need to cut back in when being given the ball from the keeper.
  • Can play the diagonal ball to the opposite side winger, like Doyle did for one of McAteer's goals.

 

I've seen be it a big deal for Pep, Arteta, Kompany and now Maresca. Primarily, I think it's the issue of being pressed, that one extra step you might need could mean the difference between being able to play out or not.

 

A huge shame for Doyle, who had started the season well. JJ probably comes into begin with, but I think we will see Ben Nelson being used in the last 10/20 for a bit to see if he's got what it takes.

I’d be reintegrating Souttar, asap on the back of the Doyle news. Coady has a way to go to get up to speed and be through his time out, with no guarantee of it being a straight-line progression.  We’re one more knock away from being a bit short.
