Stoke Post Match

Nobody is judging Vestergaard by anything other than his ability at this level. He's vastly experienced and better than the Championship, as is evidenced by his start to this campaign.

Whether he will get found out (again) at top level is an irrelevance, as his contract expires at the end of the season.

4 MORE YEARS

Some right Chodes in their fanbase.

Walking down Welford Road shouting ‘f’ing fox shaggers’ at old geezer and kids.

Absolute scum.

As me and my 13 year old lad got to about level with F Bar we had 4 or 5 w*nkers singing helicopter songs as they went up the street headed to Welford Road. Surprised they didn't get filled in.

I think the cutest part was when the Stoke commentators were thinking that Stoke were a match for us when it was 1-0...

Guy at the start that said 'yeah, i suppose Stoke are just about the underdog' amd followed it up with 'yeah, possession seems to have even out now' as the stat pops up showing us with 82%

Jannik Vestergaard's game by numbers vs Stoke:

197 touches (!!!!) – Most
180/189 passes completed (!!!!) – Most
29/33 Final third passes completed – Most
13/17 Long passes completed – Most
2/2 through balls completed – Most

A man possessed.

Especially impressive compared to the entire preston team last week who finished on 161/233

Anyone taking negatives from today or whose first thought after the final whistle is to question whether Vestergaard will be up for it next season in the PL deserves to have an extra week added onto their international break.

WhoScored and Sofascore do them

On WhoScored you click on Heatmaps

On Sofascore you have to click on the individual players

Move of the Match

^ This is Enzo Maresca's brand of football at it's absolute finest!

  • Look at how high our centre backs push up. Vestergaard gets to within 25 yards of the opposition goal WITH the ball.
  • EIGHT players are involved in this move.
  • Ricardo who starts the game as a right back, ends up in a number 10 position to put through an incredible goal.
  • Look at the way we shift the Stoke City defensive block around during all phases of this move. We move it to the right, then back, then to the left, then centrally.
    • Look at where the Stoke players start off, and where they end up moving to. This is not possession for possession's sake, this is like a game of Chess where we are moving their pieces around to setup checkmate.
  • Look at how pivotal Vestergaard is in this move. He's had the most passes of any player in the Championship. But it's not pointless passing like Puel / Rodgers, look what he's doing with it.
  • Ricardo's pass is simply sensational, the run from Iheanacho timed to perfection.
  • The finish is superb.
  • When the goal is scored, Stoke have NINE outfield players in their own box, plus their keeper and we still score.

I think this might be the best team goal we've scored in a long, long time. And that's because this is relatively early in the game against a super deep block and we broke them down systematically because of great coaching. A beautiful goal!

I'm sure the Stoke commentators were saying how it was a lucky deflection and it was only a matter of time before the mighty Stoke would show us who's boss.

It's also impressive how easy we make it look - apart from the assist, none of the passes are 'difficult'.  Ricardo ends up in acres of space - in part due to the defended chasing nacho's decoy movement towards the ball

You can see how this must have mentally worn opposition out .

It's no wonder we can really turn the screw in most games in the last 20 minutes with quality players and fresh legs .

This is a textbook Man City / Guardiola goal. A cutback-from an inside-run from one of the attacking 8's. You see this type of goal scored by Man City, Arsenal, Burnley and now us.

  • Compress play in one half of the field.
  • Switch the ball out to the opposite winger who is totally free.
  • They play the ball into the half-space.
  • The 8 attacks the half-space and cuts it back.
  • Either the striker, other 8, or other winger will be attacking the box to score.

A great example of a well rehearsed attacking pattern of play. It's also a good showcase of how with system football you can make decision-making easy for players. Fatawu doesn't need to try to be a hero, neither does Ndidi, it's simple one touch football that is very hard to defend against.

We will score many goals like this over the next few years.

Makes no difference. He’s not quick enough and he’s not good enough as a defender. It’s the championship ffs, of course he looks good

Whats relevant now is where we are, his performances under Rodgers, were limited and also not relevant.
