AFCON - Jan/Feb 2024

Recommended Posts

Was thinking about this this morning and how many players we'd miss and which games they won't be available for.

13th Jan to 11th Feb

Games we have in that time:

Cov (a)

Ipswich (H)

Swansea (H) / FA Cup 4th round

Stoke (a)

Watford (a)

Players absent:

Iheanacho / Ndidi (Nigeria)

Fatawu (Ghana)

Daka (Zambia)

I think only Southampton will be truly affected as they miss Aribo/Sulemana if called up.

Hopefully we have enough of a lead to be close to sealing the title so the absence of the 4 players above isn't too impacting...

Daka is likely to be leaving in January anyway - Hopefully Cannon will be fit by then to rotate with Vardy to cover Iheanacho - if not the transfer window is open.

Casadei/Yunus/Praet can rotate to cover for Ndidi

Kasey/Mavividi/Yunus/Marcel/Albrighton suggests we have enough cover on the wing to cover Fatawu

So with our squad in the championship, even though we may not play our best 11 - I am not concerned

Feels far less impactful than last time.  Daka is out of favour anyway, and I presume we will have Cannon by then (hopefully). Kasey should be recovered so we have plenty of wingers and I don’t believe Fatawu would be playing every game anyhow. We have Wayna as well if needed.

Ndidi feels like the biggest loss, but hopefully we will see improvements in Casadei between now and then and we also have Akgun who can take a number of roles.

Would have ideally been full strength for the Ipswich home game, presuming both of us are still top 2 by then. Of course, injury situation could change between now and then.

Might be a weird one in some ways as given their contract situations and/or place in the team, they might not come back to us!?!?!?!

Their contracts don't end in July. They can sign pre-contracts to move in summer, though. Similar to how Soyuncu did for Atletico.

Hermansen

Ricardo - Faes - Vestergaard - Justin

Winks

Choudhury KDH

Mcateer Vardy Mavididi

Gk: stolarczyk

Def: coady, Doyle, nelson

Mid: Casadei, Praet, braybrooke

Fwd: yunus, Marcal, cannon, Alves

Pretty strong match day squad there, and hopefully if we're still in a similar position come January then we might be able to pre-strengthen for the prem with a couple of quality additions. We'll be just fine :D

No, they end on 30th June...

We can still receive offers for them in January, which'll be the last time we can get anything for them is what I'm saying. And then there's Daka, who we'd probably be open to selling.

Yeah sorry that should have said January, not July. I thought you meant they could be poached for free!

If Praet and Tom Cannon are back fully fit by then, that should lessen the impact of Iheanacho and Ndidi’s absence.
Meanwhile, given how much Daka has played (or more precisely, not played) this season, “miss” would be a charitable adjective.

Nevertheless, let’s just hope their teams get knocked out early () - and, more importantly, they all return UN-INJURED!

Couldn't find this anywhere and put it in the LCFC Forum as it's likely to have a big impact on us.

https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/africa-cup-nations-draw-details-8830033

When is the Africa Cup of Nations?
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations takes place (in 2024) from January 13 to February 11. The final will be played at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.

Which Leicester players could be involved?
Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho are expected to be part of the Nigeria squad, while Patson Daka is set to feature for Zambia. And City loanee Abdul Fatawu could be in contention for Ghana.

How many City games could they miss?
They could miss up to six Championship fixtures, after the home game against Huddersfield Town on New Year's Day. They are Coventry (a), Ipswich (h), Swansea (h), Stoke (a), Watford (a) and Sheffield Wednesday (h), which takes place two days after the final. Of course, players could return to the club earlier, depending on how far they get in the tournament.

How will Leicester cope?
Losing midfielder Ndidi and striker Iheanacho for potentially five weeks, with a week of training expected before the tournament, will be a big blow to City. Striker Daka, meanwhile, is yet to feature in the league under Maresca.

They will then just be left with three options for the two number eight spots in Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Cesare Casadei and Dennis Praet, Up front they will only have Jamie Vardy and summer signing Tom Cannon, who is yet to make his debut as he recovers from a back injury.

Fatawu has impressed so far on the wing, though City should be well covered if he is called up by Ghana. There are five other wingers available to Maresca in Stephy Mavididi, Yunus Akgun, Kasey McAteer, Wanya Marcal and Marc Albrighton.

Draw details
Ndidi and Iheanacho's Nigeria have been drawn in a group with host Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.

Daka's Zambia will take on World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, along with DR Congo and Tanzania.

Fatawu's Ghana are in a group with seven-time winners Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique.

Here is the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 draw in full:

Group A: Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau.

Group B: Egypt, Ghana, Cape Verde, Mozambique.

Group C: Senegal, Cameroon, Guinea, The Gambia.

Not just the time away but the form/injuries of returning players will be a concern. Clubs will have factored this in when signing players likely to feature in AFCON.

Will be interesting to see how many players will be missing from our Championship rivals.

A very Eurocentric viewpoint here, but I've never understood why they have the tournament in January/Feb time.

African leaders will want African players to move to European leagues and promote the sport, but removing all the big names from their clubs for a month surely has teams questioning buying African stars
