The two classic examples in football were Fergie and Clough who were a bit of both but can across as horrible people who were awful to others. Can't deny their successful records at all and some of their former players still talk about them being an important influence in their career despite their tough ways. Another thing is whether they are being tough to get results or tough for their own ego? Big difference between the two. I think it's more that mainstream politicians proved themselves mostly incapable of responding to post 2008 challenges and so inevitably many people started drifting towards traditionally more extreme political positions. Well, this is where it becomes more complex. The Conservative Party is made up of various internal groupings who have their own ideas on what it means to be Conservative - you may have heard of the “5 families” term, that has been used of late to indicate the ideological splits within the party? One of these groups is the Conservative Growth Group or CGG who’s ideas centre around the economy - they want free markets, lower taxes and smaller state - and a key idea behind all this; implementing Keynesian style economics. With Johnson resigning, this group probably saw Truss - who had been Cosplaying as Margaret Thatcher for the best part of a year - as the best choice they had within their ranks to get their hands on the reigns of power. I also estimate that within the group they probably viewed Truss as a ‘useful idiot’ - a puppet they could manage - after all this is someone that’s gone from being a Lib Dem, a Remainer and a fanatic of ‘Pork Markets’ to a staunch Brexiter. Clearly what they didn’t account for was what would happen once Truss got her head in front, as she ploughed head first into metaphorical fence after metaphorical fence whilst trying to bolt towards the finish line - and how much reflective damage this has caused to the image of their economic ideas.
