Israel have now boxed themselves into a precarious situation. Such is the ferocity  yet calamitous nature of their response, there will not be a single day for the next 50 years Hamas won’t be looking for an opportunity to respond.

However is it near on impossible to eliminate every Hamas member alive and even if they did, there will be A new generation ready to fight in the next 10/ 15 years.

How can this ever end?

Israel will want to create as big a buffer zone between itself and Gaza. Trying to destroy Hamas is impossible. They're just going in to disrupt it's capabilities to attack Israel and as we've seen before many times it just doesn't work. As usual ordinary Palestinians are collateral damage for both sides.

Once again proving its anti-establishment credentials, GB News has now hired Old Etonian former Bullingdon Club member and prime minister Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson to join the other four sitting MPs they have as hosts.

Truly the turd that won't flush.

That he has ever enjoyed any sort of popularity or following is indicative of what a basket case of a country we've become

We reported earlier that hundreds of UK-based lawyers had sent an open letter to the prime minister to "act urgently", warning of serious violations of international law being committed in Gaza.

Speaking to Sky News, human rights lawyer Sir Geoffrey, who is one of the signatories, said the idea of the letter was to bring attention to the government and the public to the position in international law.

"The involvement of civilians in such an attack is clearly a violation of international law," he said.

"It's the obligation of the British government among other governments to do everything it can to persuade and urge the Israeli's not to break international human rights law."

He said the Israeli bombing campaign was "attacking indiscriminately" and "attacking a large number of civilians who want no part in the actions of Hamas as far as we are able to establish".

The signatories on this letter are some of the best of best in the profession. People I admire. When they tell you the law is on your side (or not on your side), you listen. It isn’t even up for debate now that what is happening in Gaza is against everything decent in the world and it’s up to the rest of the world to stop this massacre.

Got no idea what was so different in my post to this that appears to have been deleted.

Oh well.

What's the point in International law anymore? Russia breaks it, Israel seemingly breaks it. They won't admit it, but US have in the past. What is the point of the UN? It's so frustrating

I think the British govt were quite happy to break it recently too wrt to brexit agreement ( and refugees ??)

not sure if NATO’s removal of ISIS from certain areas was technically a breach too

I bet there are quite a lot of breaches around the world

Problem is that Hamas "soldiers" dress like civilians for two reasons.  One, in the hope either that they will be spared because the Israeli army thinks they're civilians.  Two, in the hope that civilians will be shot because the Israeli army thinks they are soldiers.

If the Hamas army is an army, let them wear uniform and fight.  (Or surrender.)

The Brexit thing was whether it was an offence to invoke clause 16, the clause put in the Brexit agreement about changing the arrangements for Northern Ireland.  In the end it was decided that if there was a clause in the agreement about how to change the rules, it wasn't a breach of the agreement to invoke it and change the rules.  In any case, the EU had already invoked it first.  Complete red herring.

Yeah Hamas are *****. That’s obvious. 7000 plus (before we work out the number following the bombardment today) I’d suggest there is a fair few children in there. Probably more than half. They are not Hamas. Israel are dickheads too with a reckless warmonger, the US as their backer. What’s happening to those children is evil caused by evil, egotistical adults. No justification - the argument there was any good side fell away for anyone decent a week a go. Both are murderous animals using different tools. The opinion of some incredibly intelligent people are now shouting that out.

The UN is a diplomatic forum, not an enforcer of international law and rule. It’s purpose is diplomacy and for that most part it works, the current secretary general has been great as was Kofi Annan back in the day.

Israel must have been using some pretty powerful bunker busting bombs last night on the tunnel systems, quite possibly perversely where the hostages are being held. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that all of the hostages are dead as if Israel knew where they were being kept they'd have tried to rescue them anyway. Any surviving hostages are now likely to be killed by Hamas in retaliation anyway.

I'm sure Hamas thought that having the hostages might have saved them from something of the scale of last night (hostage negotiations has been very fruitful for them in the past) but it seems Israel are using realpolitik in the sense of this is going to save more lives in the long run, even if taking many innocent lives of Palestinian citizens and Israeli hostages now.

If the people of Gaza can find leadership who will build them a sustainable mini state and not one obsessed with attacking the Jews for an unobtainable goal that might help.  Look at how Gaza was before the Israeli left last time, and how it was before this kicked off.
