According to the CPS website, "making indecent images can have a wide definition in the law and can include opening an email attachment containing such an image, downloading one from a website, or receiving one via social media, even if unsolicited and even if part of a group.”

It is always worth remembering that legal terms don't always match our daily use of the same terms.

An obvious example is the use of the terms "mad" vs "bad".   But there are many others.

You’re talking a few thousands in a pool of net migration over a period being a 5 mill increase. Vast majority of them come over to take advantage of the wellfare state

Can you provide evidence to support that as that really isn’t the case?

Seems an odd definition, specifically the unsolicited part.

Edwards has "made" a number of images, so in theory this could just be opening images of child pornography sent to you unsolicited?

I suppose the word made is just open enough to be able to apply it to various circumstances where indecent images are being stored and there is some participatory element in being issued with these images.

The Southport tragedy really has had an impact on me as I’m sure it’s had an impact on everyone else.Woken up this morning with a sick feeling. As a father, my kids go to holiday camps and this is unthinkable. Can’t imagine what the parents are going through.

This is what makes it such a ridiculously delicate case, as I previously noted. The law really needs tightening up and clarifying, here.

You can't tell me someone who would do this is anything other than mentally ill.  This is where we need to spend money.

Probably my most reactionary belief is that some people are just irredeemably evil.

Missing six-year-old girl in London. Deeply worrying. Last seen around midday but not reported missing until 10.45pm….

Why on earth is a 6 year old girl wandering around outside on an estate on her own at midday. Where are the parents?!

There are some fecked up people in this world to attach kids.

I'm sure the old "diminished responsibility"  will be stated for the offender

Very rare a story upsets me. Most stories seem too distant, too remote.

But this event and the John Hunt story a couple of weeks ago are both cut very deep.

So unbelievably painful for the families

Troll.

Labour haven't broken anything. I don't agree with some of what RR did yesterday and I think it will of surprised a few Lab voters, it's not going to break anything though - I'd like to see Keir Starmer or Angela Rayner up in Southport today - I don't care if they can't do much, but this is something that hasn't happened in a long time and soundbites from Westminster won't cut it.

I suppose the word made is just open enough to be able to apply it to various circumstances where indecent images are being stored and there is some participatory element in being issued with these images.

Opening an email attachment or message,WhatsApp for example, creates an image file on your device, you've therefore, by the letter of the law, made an image. Solicited or unsolicited.

I was also reminded when reading about this yesterday, that the legal definition regarding child pornography/indecent images, is 18. A person could legally have a physical relationship with someone aged 17 but if they sent you a naked/semi clothed photo of themselves, you're making an indecent image of a child.

Which all seems a lot less disgusting than something involving a young child, which is what most of us would naturally assume when indecent images of children is mentioned.

I'm not condoning what Edwards alleged offence is as one assumes the police / CPS haven't the resources to prosecute someone for the odd picture if, you're say 20 and in a relationship with someone who's 17. There's obviously more to it in the Edwards case and It's especially creepy given his age and position.

Don't know about anyone else, but if someone sent me an unsolicited Cat A image of child abuse I'd probably be on the phone to the police.

Cat B and C too come to that.

Well yes, of course.

I didn't mean to imply that Edwards was innocent, I was just curious about the legal definition and how that could be applied.

Obviously if you were sent something like that completely innocently and reported it immediately you wouldn't be getting charged, although you will still have technically "made" an image by the above definition.

Yvette Cooper is there this morning and Starmer's going up today.
