Boxing Day Curse?

Is our record that bad on Boxing Day? I’ve never noticed or thought about it before. Is there anywhere you can see all of our Boxing Day results?

Thought it’s been pretty good tbh

Beat Reading and stayed top from that point onwards to win the Championship

Beat Man City with Ricardos goal

Sure, we’ve had some tonkings, a couple at the hands of Liverpool and last season when Rodgers was at his worst v Newcastle

I wouldn’t say it’s a curse

We have certainly had some poor results on Boxing Day. As a positive though a favourite memory is the 2-1 win at Anfield in 1984 with goals by Lineker and Alan Smith.

I think it stems from an 8 game run with only one win from 1996 to 2003. We did play Arsenal twice and Liverpool once, so they were understandable. We beat Sheffield Wednesday in 1998, but lost to Leeds and twice to Ipswich and probably most galling of all conceded an injury time equaliser to Newcastle in 2003, when we were absolutely desperate for points in a relegation scrap!

Rotherham at home early 2000s always stands out to me. Absolutely freezing and one of the worst games of football I’ve ever witnessed.

2004. We were doing well in the league and they were bottom. 0-1 defeat. Shocking!

Our record on it is awful. 2 wins in 13 years. In our 9 years in the Premier League we won 1, drew 1 and lost 7. It's this and remembrance fixture, we are poor on both and this year, sods law, we've ended up playing the teams in 2nd and 3rd on them.

We have admittedly had pretty hard games on boxing day though. We didn't get a nice hand.

That was the day I began to despise Dion Dublin. He was all smiles and shaking hands with anyone he could get near at the end, like he didn't have a care in the world. I've never got over it and I can't watch Homes Under the Hammer anymore.

is it not a bit bizarre that we've played ipswich 5 times on boxing day (at least from a cursory check) in the last 23 years?

We do always seem to get them on Boxing Day if in the same league. Recently it's seemed that way with playing Liverpool during the festive period.

Because the fixture computer isn't so much a computer as two or three blokes amending the previous season's fixture list.

I've never believed in curses or somehow jinxing things especially in football with so many players, managers and tactics changing over so many years. A link just isn't possible but that record, even allowing for a few games against top clubs, is horrendous.
