Eurovision 2024

There's all the lighthearted fun of Eurovision high camp and glitter and dressing up, and its messages about inclusivity, and then there's the UK's entry last night, caressing the jockstraps of his scantily clad fellow performers as they writhed about in a set that looked like a fairly dirty public toilet.

I can imagine that being a fairly hard sell to the voting public of some of the more socially conservative parts of Eastern and Southern Europe as they decided who they wanted to vote for.

Nul points.

I think there were quite a few reasons why we didn’t get any public points last night and this is definitely one of them. Worth noting in contrast that the winner literally sang about being non-binary but reflected more on the emotion of the experience.

Plus of course a catchy song, a dynamic top range and simple but inventive staging.

Wouldn't over analyse the UK's performance.  The song was medicore and he basically whispered the entire thing as he was too busy dancing.  Finished about where they belonged.

P.S This hangover is horrendous.

It's funny that the UK got 0 votes but there isn't a particularly deep reason for it.

We don't have to qualify so we never really bother making songs that would attract the televote.

It sort of did what it was designed to do - got some of the smaller jury points because it's a bland radio pop song and flopped with the public.

We might well have won with Sam Ryder if it wasn't the Ukraine invasion year so I don't think it's impossible for the UK to win.

I also think so. Sam Ryder was so close. Yes we brits stink up Europe every summer, but we pay a helluva premium to do so. Families literally save all year round to spend two weeks in france to read a book in a garden. Surely the hatred will end once the Europeans realise the value of our dumb £ spending potential, and we get some public votes

The press parroting the “uk will never win Eurovision again, Europe hates us” nonsense again, somehow forgetting that Sam Ryder would’ve absolutely pissed the competition in 2022 if it weren’t for the Ukraine war.

It was a bang average, radio friendly song which lacked any dynamism whatsoever, and his vocals were easily the worst out of the entire night. He was singing flat for 80% of it.

Send a world class HEATER like Spaceman, and an unbelievable live vocalist like Ryder and we’ll do fine. Stop sending shit songs.

Why is the UK in this competition when they're not in the EU anymore?..

Because it's nothing to do with the EU. The winners have never been a member of the EU. Israel isn't in Europe or the EU, nor is Armenia.

So why is it called Eurovision?

Because it's members of the European Broadcasting Union (plus Australia). Its been going since the late 50's before the EU was a thing.

There's more countries in the EBU than there are in Europe. 56 countries with 20 associate nations too, but there's only 44 geographically in Europe and only 27 of those are in the EU, so there's plenty who do Eurovision that are either not geographically in Europe, not in the EU or both.

Thanks, genuinely didn't realise that.

We’re still physically in Europe even if we’re not in the EU, we didn’t lift the anchor off our country and row it to Asia.
