New Backroom staff

Recommended Posts

They announced Enzo’s at once, he wanted Roberto Vitiello as assistant who struggled with work permit issues - Hence Caballero getting announced later.

Oddly it seems Vitiello ended up at the club somewhere along the line which was never announced. I didn’t notice him until the staff celebration photos at the end of the season.

Anyway I imagine that they’ll announce Cooper’s all at once. I imagine it will certainly be Tate, Rands and Alcock who he’s had everywhere with him as well as Hughes seeming likely.

He had Mike Marsh as his assistant at England and Swansea and I wonder if he'd try and get him out of Preston? He's vastly more experienced than Tate is.

A new set piece taker needed 🤔

Also could Cooper actually give Souttar a chance 🤔

Hope so, he’s the only player we’ve had since Maguire who is genuinely a threat from in both boxes from set pieces

Needs to pick up pace and ensure all or at least most of the staff are in place for start of pre season.

Given up with any hope of new signings having the best chance of integration.

Wait for July 1st or a week after... its not that long away. I'm pretty sure his team are ready to go, just gotta wait.

They probably already are in place, and all will be announced at once rather than lots of different press releases. No need to panic

Exceptional in the for column, not so great in the against column.

Tbf I do think this comes down to personnel probably more than the attacking side. For example, the goal scored against us, was just good play from Norwich whereas preventing goals being conceded, you need tall and aggressive Ariel players to deal with the balls in. I think that’s what we have lacked massively for a years now.

If you look at their set pieces there's way more to it than "lump it to the big man."

They usually make a few passes first and / or drag players out of position. That said they sometimes pulled off some goals that were clearly from researching the defensive patterns of other teams and exploiting their marking patterns, such as the Sara goal against us.

I wonder if he told them they had to get back to own half after their own set pieces failed?

Those stats aren't that great, are they? 14th lowest conceded :dunno:

I’m guessing the stats came from here https://theanalyst.com/eu/2023/08/championship-stats-2023-24-opta/

Norwich conceded the same amount of goals than us from set pieces last season.

Even though Sara scored against us, he was very much their first choice set piece taker last season.

We don’t really have a specialised set piece taker at the club, it’s something that we need to address with Hughes coming in.

As for Norwich’s set piece patterns, seeing them a few times last season, it was evident they had intelligence to how they attacked set pieces. I’ll try and do some digging on their set piece goals 👍🏻

Totally agree abotu the set piece taker. I think had Sensi signed, had he been fit enough, he would have helped out massively in that regard.

Cooper bringing in this guy is a good sign. If you watched all of last season's Leicester games and looked at the data you would come to the conclusion pretty quickly that the team isn't threatening enough with set pieces, yet alone scoring from them and it's an easy enough fix.

I also think the term set piece specialist is a bit antiquated. This coach basically embodies that the most effective set pieces don't rely on world class delivery to a specific area, but more a pre-rehearsed routine that works on easy passes and sharp movement. Don't get me wrong if you have someone that can deliver a corner like Beckham, that is worth it's weight in gold, but looking at opposition patterns prior to playing them and coming up with specific routines will likely be more effective overall. Roberto Carlos scored the best free kick of all time, but if yo ulook at his overall stats, they are pretty poor!

This took some editing but after doing some digging, the majority of Norwich’s set piece goals from last season were a mixture of direct free kicks from either Sara or Nunez, and goals scored from corners that heavily focused on front post movement, this through a mixture of cut backs, front post runs or what you’d classify as front post flick ons. As well as Sara’s goal against us, they scored 7 more goals in similar fashion last season as seen through these gifs(Hopefully they don’t effect this thread 🤞🏻)

I'm bricking myself for this season's tactics thread seeing the content @kingfox is posting!

This is like being top scorer for your team, but then they go and sign Haaland :nigel:

Don’t worry mate, I’ll let you do your thing 👍🏻

I’ll use my time scouting players off Brazil Scout YouTube Vids Wyscout instead 😁

Waiting until 1 July, so we don't have any more spending this financial year.
