For anyone interested in an update of round of 16 possible opponents.

If England win the group it's 3rd from either Group D (likely Poland or Austria), E (frankly any of Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine or Belgium) or F (likely Turkey or Czechia).

If England finish 2nd it's likely to be Germany

If England finish 3rd its either the winner of E (anyones, see above) or F (likely Portugal)

History suggests it would be very unlikely a team with 4pts would fail to qualify as one of the best 3rd place teams.

Some tough games there even if we win the group

Just watching Spain play and the balance they have with two wingers and Pedri finding pockets as the 10. Yet here we are playing several players out of position and not having a clue what we're doing.

Southgates name belongs up there with the worst in history imo.

Aint no way he's not being shit on purpose. Nobody on this planet that has ever heard of the concept of football can look at what he does and think it's a good idea.

But most of the media think he’s doing a great job. The most successful ever England manager for 50 odd years 😅😅

It's silly how it's not based on trophies won for a country like England, that's what it should be judged on.

Ranieri is one of our greatest managers because he won the league, the rest of his term is largely immaterial in terms of legacy, even if he got to a league cup semi final or something.

that post match interview with southgate where he says we have no replacement for Phillips shows just how incredibly crap and short sighted he is,

imo we have someone better than Phillips on the bench in Wharton, even Mainoo id say is better

also feels like Southgate is afraid to give anyone else a chance, Mainoo and palmer had storming second half of the seasons and it looks like neither is gonna get a minute, same with Wharton, like what was the point in even bringing them

honestly i cant believe some of the complete waffle that comes out of his mouth, sooner hes gone the better for me.

When the Fa put Southgate in charge it was like appointing a shelf stacker at Tesco to become the new chief executive at Barclays bank.

Not a clue what he is doing, only got the job because the original guy got caught out. So much talent going down the train, FA had there chance two years ago to make a change and instead decided to give this fool another two more years. Even so got no faith in our FA, to even appoint the next person right. Lioness got it right, why can't the men?

Whoever takes over next has a fantastic opportunity with the squad, but needs to get message across that the national team must play with a high standard, plus be fully on board with the project. Focus on the football nowt else. Also maybe change the captaincy, Kane is world class player but far from a leader. Stones captain for the future?

I've always been gently pro-Southgate - but the problems today were clearly ones of coaching, or lack of.  All running into each others' spaces all match, quality midfielders (and Alexander Arnold) getting caught in possession constantly. I do think Southgate seems to be a good man manager and to have created a great environment in the national team, so there's things he's done well which we shouldn't underestimate the importance of preserving. But as the quality of the squad has improved since 2018, when he did well with a fairly limited team, he's not been able to find the coaching solutions to move the team on. In some important ways it's actually regressing.

If we're going to play with Kane dropping deep and the wide forwards bombing past him and/or combining with him, there is no point playing a number 10 who is going to run into the same spaces. You either have to forcefully tell Kane to play on the shoulder, or not bother playing a 10. This has been a problem for years. The right midfield for this team next game, without tearing everything up, is probably something like Mainoo sat in at 6 with Rice and Bellingham as twin 8s.

I’ve always given him the benefit of the doubt. Thought he favoured pragmatism, which is a fine approach in international football, but fvck me that interview has sent me into a wobbler. Kalvin Phillips? Bloke’s taking the piss, surely?

Completely shocked at that Phillips comment. This guy is an utter joke.

Mainoo, Palmer on the pitch and stop trying to force Bellingham and Foden into the same team together.

That Phillips quote sums him up. Just try and see the funny side in this exit. Probably better for England's longer term future if it's to someone like Austria as he probably doesn't survive it.
