If that’s aimed at me, I’m not measuring by success or even quality. Those sides definitely united the country more than the recent ones. I wanted to watch them. Right now I could take it or leave it.

Was thinking about this earlier. I'm 42 and I genuinely think the number of times I've seen England play really well, like to their proper potential...is probably in single figures.

Never, the 5-1 against Germany and 4-1 against Netherlands are the two greatest England games in my lifetime. 
 

Even when we lost to the Ronaldinho goal, we always looked like we could beat any team in the world. We were exciting to watch and had ability.

 

Southgate’s pragmatic, boring approach and to a degree lucky draws in tournaments have shown him to be better than what he’s done.
