Drinking in the Stands

I dunno the big cans in American stadiums were about $20 each when I was there last year.

Exactly this. The pricing is so high here that few people want to waste their beer, or risk getting kicked out of the stadium. The cost of alcohol is also a contributor to the tailgating culture- people show up at 7AM to grill and drink, then go into a 4PM NFL game. By the time the game starts, they don't need much more to drink...or they just stay in the parking lot and watch the game on a TV from there.

Even as a supporter of Philadelphia teams who carry a certain reputation, the amount of cups and other items that get thrown during soccer matches around the world outweighs what gets thrown on a field at games here. They'd much rather say horrible things than waste an expensive beer.

Unless you're in Buffalo, of course...

^maybe don't click the above YouTube link at work.

It was 9.50 euros (including cup deposit) for a beer in Dortmund and Munich for the euro games I went to. It was £7.50 for a can of warm Heineken at Wembley in 2021. I don't think price is putting anyone off from throwing a beer around because that would be the case now. People will always be too stupid to consider boycotting overpriced and terrible quality beer, and then get psyched when others are throwing the beer around, and follow.

The tailgate culture you talk about is similar to what we do here. It is common to meet hours before kick off to drink. It still does not stop people buying overpriced food and drink at the venue, because again, too stupid.

I watched the redskins often when I worked there, tail gating was ok but centred around family and food.

I know they do it at the rugby, but rugby fans rarely misbehave in the stands?

Am concerned that promoting beer in the stands might help to kick things off at certain football games..

another weird rule here, (might just be for the college football) is that there are no drink sales after half time. Not sure the exact reasoning for it but it caught me out and i had to just watch the sport without a drink lol

This.

Spend years being fed beer in Colombia and Venezuela by beautiful women who bring it to your seat.

In Caracas, you don’t even pay during the match. Just keep waving your hand, drinking the beer, and everyone accepts you’ll settle up near the end. Plus you keep the embossed litre cup for free.

Here, the women would look like @Raj, it’d cost a mint, they’d want to charge £25 just for the service and Top would want his £25 for the drinking vessel.

You want a drink and football, come join us in non-league where we do it proper like.

Yes, if drinking in the stands is going to happen then service in the stands need to happen. Maybe a good way to encourage their holy grail of membership for everyone is that you wave for a beer and a lass/lad stretches a pole out to with a beer (shit beer obvs) and it’s charged to a card linked to your membership on the seat from the ticket. Won’t stop the toilet breaks though.

I’d love to sample some tailgating culture at a gig, UK is ruled by the get locked in the venue and overcharged culture.

Just a personal opinion as someone who is partial to  a few pints on matchday, I enjoy my matchday routine of a few beers before the game & a few after. The 3 hour period between (3.00K.O.) half two-ish & half five-ish is a welcome alcohol free period. This means I can avoid paying over inflated prices for crap beer in a plaggy cup & enjoy pub prices (dear, but not as dear) & a decent brew.

Personally I’m enjoying sport more by drinking less, managing to make the whole 105 minutes without a beer or loo break is great.

I actually quite like the break from drinking on a match day.

It'd be a touch more palatable if they had good beer, local beer, it was poured quickly, it was fresh, there was safe standing so people aren't making you get up and down, it was better priced, you were served by somebody with some brain cells or it was in a decent plastic cup but besides that nothing to add

This will never happen. I refuse to pay nearly £6 for a plastic cup of warm p*ss anyway, let alone throwing it all over place in the stands. The only thing worse is missing half the game to stand in a que for it.

I know it was under discussion of bringing Drinking in the Stands to English football but I really hope it does not happen.

Having been in Germany for the Euros with England the amount of beer and cups(albeit plastic) going everywhere was a joke. Then you look at scenes like tonight with Austria v Turkey.

Keep it to the concourse and most important of them all... the pubs:cheers:

I watched two or three people on title day going up & down the stands with them.

The only benefit is that it might get a few off the concourses earlier and get an atmosphere going before 2.55 although I don't think our lot can be compared to the Turks or Albanians when it comes to behaviour in the stands.

As far as I can remember I’ve only ever brought a pint once up to my seat with a hot pukka pie (pre kickoff). Can’t be asked to waste time during the game tbh.

I’m happy to enjoy a quick pint before the game at s pub and/or have one afterwards.

drinking at the game doesn’t appeal to me. Im too involved in watching.

Here where I live now in Cali if I go see a game at San Jose earthquakes the bar (longest open sports bar in N.America) you can just stand & watch from there it’s pitch side. Just can’t imagine people throwing beer around! Like other expats have said it’s too damn expensive to waste and your asking for an ass kicking if you drench the wrong geezer.

‘Ass kicking’ and ‘geezer’ in the same sentence.

The special relationship between the USA and UK we hear so much about summed up right there

Not a huge one for drinking at games because once the seal is broken i need to visit the gents every 20 mins. But on the odd occasion it would be nice to be sat there with a beer.

Watching the euro's makes you realise why you sometimes cant have nice things. Brain dead idiots chucking cups at players, and then the desire to throw drinks in the air for that limbs instagram shot are just horrible.
