Leicester City beat Villarreal as Steve Cooper gives 24 players pre-season run-out
Jamie Vardy and Stephy Mavididi were on the scoresheet with new signings Caleb Okoli and Michael Golding both in action in a behind-closed-doors game in Evian-les-Bains

Jamie Vardy and Stephy Mavididi netted as Leicester City beat Villarreal 2-1 in a behind-closed-doors game on Saturday.

Billed as a training exercise before their first official pre-season fixture at Shrewsbury on Tuesday, City and their Spanish opponents played out four periods of 30 minutes, allowing Steve Cooper to give game-time to at least 24 players. With a win secured too, it wrapped up City’s training camp in Evian-les-Bains on a high.

Vardy captained the side that started the match at Stade Camille Fournier and he opened the scoring too. James Justin scampered down the left flank onto Harry Souttar's raking pass and squared the ball, where Vardy was on hand to finish first time.

Villarreal were quickly level, with Souttar turning into his own net. Trying to cut out a pass across the six-yard box, the Australian international slid in, inadvertently knocking the ball over the line.

For the second hour, City changed their whole 11, and they grabbed a winner. Conor Coady pinged a long ball over the top, with Mavididi bringing it down expertly. He waited for support, but then went alone, curling into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Tuesday’s game at Croud Meadow will reveal more details about City’s set-up, but highlights from Saturday’s test suggested they were lining up in a 4-4-2 out of possession, but potentially with wing-backs in possession.

Starting the game were Danny Ward, Brandon Cover, Harry Souttar, Caleb Okoli, James Justin, Harry Winks, Wilfred Ndidi, Abdul Fatawu, Wanya Marcal, Tom Cannon, and Jamie Vardy, with Will Alves substituted on. For the second hour, the line-up was Daniel Iversen, Ricardo Pereira, Ben Nelson, Conor Coady, Luke Thomas, Hamza Choudhury, Boubakary Soumare, Kasey McAteer, Michael Golding, Stephy Mavididi, and Patson Daka, with Silko Thomas brought on later.

So, in addition to the goal from Coady, which actually turned out to be Mavidi, the OG wasn't Ndidi but was, in fact Souttar.

Easy to confuse those

What's the point having a game "behind closed doors" that we get half arsed updates for (where people confuse Souttar with Ndidi) and then get all the highlights after anyway?

Very least Leicester could have just gave updates. Then Tuesdays game has no coverage either?

Supposed to be a Premier League club again ffs

I don't think it's worth wetting yourself over though. Will there ever be a saturation point in football? We've gone from being able to watch every game to watching every friendly, to seeing the coaching sessions. Presumably we'll get to a point where players bowel movements will be screened and scrutinised.

Call me less dedicated than some but the lack of coverage really doesn't matter for this. It was little more than a knockabout to give players a run.  Meaningless and effectively not even one proper game, over 120 mins with two completely different line ups.  Me personally I can't/don't watch friendlies at all anymore, England or city.  It isn't the same when nothing is at stake or it isn't a competitive game.  Let's not get all worked up.  There will be overkill coverage once the season starts and sky and kp want to open your wallet

Blimey. If Iversen could use his feet he would be one heck of a keeper.

He's not that bad with his feet - i mean, it's not his strength but there are many top flight keepers who aren't great with their feet - i guess we've been spoilt having mads and kasper for so long.

Heard rumours that they've started to refer to inverted full backs as 'the leicester way' inside the club.

With all due respect, he was terrible and it stood out way before we had Mads here. When he replaced Ward you could see it was a real problem for the team and the coaches. They would spend a huge part of the warm up getting him to practice kicking out to the wings, only for a huge percentage of the kicks to go out of play. Each time it happened you could see the frustration on players faces, but they would all give the thumbs up as it was obvious they knew he wasn’t capable.

I remember Dean Smith going mental on the touchline against Newcastle as with about a minute left of the game Iversen has a brain fart, delays his kick, and when he does it it goes out of play.

He’s a top drawer shot stopper and I really like him as a keeper and he seems like a top bloke. He has some of the worst football feet in the game.

Well that's going to be on some overpriced merch in a month or two

I wasn’t bothered about watching Villarreal or being told about it but it’ll be a big shame if we’re not able to watch the Shrewsbury or Palermo games.

Shrewsbury isn't on anything.

With equal respect, perhaps you're looking at this from a very narrow perspective - if your basing it on that stint he had replacing Ward.  I mean it's not a massive sample size, and we were so bad in possession during that period that any keeper would probably have been poor.

I accept, though, that it's far from being a strength of his, but at the same time there aren't masses of keepers, even now, who are decent with their feet, many are simply shot stoppers.

It's all moot, anyway, cause he doesn't seem to have a future with us....

Because they need something to blame Rudkin for?
