Cooper - OUT

Recommended Posts

Talk of sacking him is too early. Let’s look at what he’s been handed

Premier League quality (my opinion, not fact)

Hermansen

Justin (maybe)

Faes (maybe)

Skipp

Ndidi (if playing DM)

Ricardo

Mavididi

Abdul (maybe)

Winks

Buonanotte (possibly but Cooper ain’t picking him)

It’s quite a small list isn’t it? What’s he supposed to do?

Yes: Needs to pick a less defensive midfield at home

Yes: Pick Abdul when playing a 39 year old left back

But really, not a lot to work with.

Give the bloke a chance.

this is true, and ultimately why we've ****ed up so badly by giving it to this gremlin - when you get into the midseason sacking pattern, what you inevitably end up doing is bringing in more and more firefighters and then giving them a permanent job out of decorum when they get survival (see Kelly and Shakespeare for examples).

that said, much as potter is a project manager and a builder, I would like to think that the Pontypridd Pulis hasn't managed to completely rip up the roots Enzo left in such a short time. There is a team with good passing intelligence there to unlock again which is a big part of Potters game

It makes it tricky because we don't want to give the job to, as you say, a firefighter whose ceiling is scraping 16th or 17th as we'd only be in the same position again 12 months from now.

The fact we're reasonably early into the season and the core of Maresca's team is in place means a manager with a possession-based philosophy and the balls to deploy the attacking players properly could be pretty transformative pretty quickly, so long as self-belief isn't completely torpedoed.

Hermansen and Skipp I don't think anyone can doubt. Mavididi is showing the class we hoped he would. The rest you can make a case for all not being good enough for the Premier League. Or at least they're here because no other Premier League team wanted them when we were in the Championship.

You don’t think that:

Vardy : No. brilliant goal at palace but doesn’t run channels, can’t hold it up for us. Should be sub only. Obviously a legend. Best ever. But nearly 38

Eduoard: Not after seeing him at Walsall. Hope he proves me wrong

Okoli: Not yet. Awful distribution

Vestergaard : No chance. Too slow

Crazy take that.

It's not the quality of the players, it's what you do with them, and much of what Cooper is doing with them is simply wrong. (I don't currently have the time to go into tactical detail but the positional and personel changes he's made have set us back massively). We won the league with an inferior squad in comparrison to perhaps 10 other teams that season.

To suggest there isn't much Cooper can do to improve the situation is, without wanting to offend, is ridiculous.

If you can tell me what his system is, what his style is, what his tactical aims are then I'd love to know.

If we are going down the 'players aren't good enough route', think about how this group of Premier League players didn't have a shot on target against League 2 Walsall until the 78th minute and ask honestly, is that because our players are worse than Walsalls, or is it the way we set them up to play? It can only be the latter.

Totally agree. We need to see his style of play. But it’s been 5 league games. Not sure anyone could do better with this lot.

I was heavily critical of his Walsall first 11. Luke Thomas is not a footballer. Soumare can’t be arsed to  be here so why pick him. But… he kept Forest up with a similar ability squad. I just think we should give him more time.

Whilst I kinda get where you’re coming from I look at differently.

For me, I find it easier to list clubs who out and out have better squads than us:

City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Villa, Chelsea, Spurs, United, Brighton, Newcastle, West Ham, Forest?, Fulham?, Brentford?, B’mouth?  -ones in question marks we are either close or you could make a case we match in terms of squads.

I would certainly say we have a better squad than Ipswich, Southampton, Wolves, Everton and even Palace

So you’ve asked everyone to give Cooper a chance, but yourself have written off 4 players? Interesting.

I’m sorry, but when you actively chose not to attack a 39 year old right footed winger playing at left back, and then say you had to bring your best player off because I’ve was tired, with two minutes left to play, and then say it was a like for like swap, a left footed inverted winger for a right? Your chances run out very quickly…..

The long and short of is Cooper hasn’t a clue what he is doing with this squad, he’s already displayed this, so what is the point in carrying on? It will simply go from bad to worse whilst Cooper stays, and he will ultimately get the sack, it’s just a case of when, and hopefully not when it’s too late.

And, this squad is actually a lot better than people think, that’s the one positive to take so far.

Okoli has been our best defender this season but you’ve got Faes and Justin in there…?

Maybe you're right but if that is the case, what is going to change with time? The squad isn't going to be any different until January and possibly not even then, and if the problem is that the players aren't up to standard then surely you would want to get a better coach than Steve Cooper to get them playing above their level.

Haven’t asked anyone to do anything. Just said in my opinion, he doesn’t have a huge amount of Premier League standard players.
