The Wrong Targets

to be fair we might have with Goulding, only time will tell.

Cooper has dropped Golding to the u23’s. His focus on youth development appears to be a fallacy. The only time he definitely showed it was when he was managing England u17’s and he had no choice! He’s ignored Alves, Braybrooke, Golding, Marcal, and even MacAteer during this pre season.

Probably wants to stay in Germany - you don't know his personal circumstances, the wage won't be dissimilar - why on earth would anyone with any sense want to come here for anything other than a decent wage packet

Right targets, if no one else were interested I'd be worried.

We have been gazumped twice, both by teams in a better moments then us.

It was always going to be challenging with a points deduction hang over our heads.

We are also probably trying to be more careful with fee and wages, which people have been asking for.

But the flip side of that is you aren't always going to get the targets you want.

It also a lot easier to find people to strengthen a side in the Championship then it is in the PL.

i dont think the best will be brought out of any of these by Cooper as he wont be here by the end of the year.

Suspect all of them will be key next year in the championship.

Whatever happened to finding a Kante, Mahrez, Vardy even Fuchs.

It may well be that Steve Cooper is insisting only on more experienced players and ideally those with experience of the Premier League

Well yeah, we're not very appealing at the moment - Most players will wait to see if there are other options.

But 'never interested'? Probably not true.

We should be looking in the championship, lots of decent players there but we are obsessed with going abroad.

Agree with this. Surely there are good players at championship clubs that would be keen to give the Premier League a go even if the points deduction is hanging over us

If you look at Goldings body language and demeanour when he was signed and in the first few videos at Seagrave, he looks like a little boy in a man's world. That was 100% my first impression. He may well be a really great technical footballer and develop quickly between now and 21 BUT he didn't strike me as the sort of force or personality that would jump straight into the first team squad. so i wouldn't hold this up as him not giving youth a chance. I also don't think he can be blamed if Alves who has never played even a championship game isn't at the forefront of his plans. He's got players like Bobby decordova reid and buonanotte who have 50's an 100's of premier league appearances under their belt for teams that stayed up - so if they are further up the pecking order it's understandable.

Hlozek was the right target until an unfortunate series of events. Hoffenheim lost a player to injury at the same time as they got a lump sum windfall from Rutter.

They sold Rutter for £35-40m and Leeds are selling for the same. That's not the reason. They sold a lad to Dortmund last week.

There's plenty of good players in the 2nd tiers of Spain, France, Germany etc. The landscape of football means it's basically not possible to sign a Mahrez but there are plenty of Benrahma types.

Then there's lots of talent players playing in the C tier nations like in the Czech Republic, Croatia, Belgium, Scandinavia, etc that'd jump at the chance to play for us - even in the Championship. Never mind South America or East Asia.

All you need to do is look how Ipswich and Southampton have operated this summer, almost every signing for their first teams have experienced playing football in the Championship, Sugawara at Southampton is the only exception.

This is the market we have to target, it might be a bit on the underwhelming side, but that’s where we are as a football club nowadays, we are in the same pond as Ipswich and Southampton, whether some fans like it or not.

Also targeting this market will stand us in good stead should we drop back down to the Championship.

We seem to be targeting the wrong players. Soule, Zaha, Hlozek and Ioannidis. There is no way any of them would want to join a club in our predicament. They play for or are joining Champions league or Europa league teams.

We need to be realistic about where we are at the moment. In the past targeting lower leagues has paid off for is. We need to revert to that again. Chair, Hamer and Adebayo are examples, although not young, they would improve the team whichever division we're in. They would be affordable both in transfer fee and salary. I thought Chair was impressive at Leicester last season and both Hamer and Adebayo performed well in the premier league.

We need to stop window shopping in Harrods and get some bargains from Aldi or Lidl.

thats pretty accurate tbf, although we could still potentially get Ioannidis,

but i doubt it

rest is pretty much accurate

Is it just coincidence then that Bebou got injured and then they gazumped us for Hlozek

He's as much to blame then as anyone else.

This is why I was banging on about Szmodics as that is type of player we could realistically sign.

Recruitment needs a re model.

god I can't wait for Szmodics to flop so people can stop ****ing talking about him. last season is the only time he's looked above even league one standard, he's another Ross McCormack or Jordan Rhodes

Like it or not that is the bracket of players we are able to sign, didn't know you could see into the future but yea let's see how he gets on.

Don't think that's wholly true given we pushed for Soule and Hlozek.

It's probably a mix. Tanner suggested we're going for players where it's harder to sign them due to the prices and competition.

in which case we're better off signing noone than approaching 7 figures on a striker who prior to last season had a 1 in 7 record at championship level.
