I requested an audition with an at the time, reasonably well known band in London in 1989 and tracked them down to a nightclub called Gossips. They entertained my interest - patronised me, but unbeknown to me already had a guitar player lined up. I sat at the bar with Lemmy, who was propping it up and he told me not to waste my time on a bunch of egotistical prima donnas. He bought me a few drinks - top shelf - and was happy to dredge up stories about Hawkwind and his past at my behest - no pretence, self-deprecating as ever, whilst showing a genuine interest in my ambitions. I shit you not - 15 years later I walked into the Rainbow on Sunset LA and he was in his customary position at the bar. I headed over grinning and iwithout really looking up he said, "What the **** kept you? You owe me a single malt pal. Double neat. Your round". Absolute salt of the Earth that bloke. RIP.

This is probably one of the best claim to fame stories I've ever head. Absolutely spectacular.

I'm genuinely envious. What a story.

If this were truly Lemmy, the entire mountain in the background would need to be covered in Marshall stacks

It's sad that I have the time to do this on a bank holiday weekend.

Another anecdote. We played the London Astoria several times and in those days on a stage that size you absolutely had to have a wall of speakers as opposed to amps the size of peanuts. Marshall are based in Bletchley - very close to where the enigma code was cracked by Turing et al. It was common knowledge that they are perfectly happy to loan out speakers for this purpose if the venue is suitably large because it gets their name out there (not that it wasn't synonymous enough with that sort of audience). For our final show there we sent up a couple of Sherpa and Bedford vans and had a backline like the picture above - utterly absurd. Of course, all the 4x4 cabs are dummies and empty with no speakers in them. I used to use a Marshall half stack and a full stack for bigger venues which gave a fuller sound behind me. Otherwise, it's daft, since the bass player DId into the desk anyway and the PA does all the work. We had to return them the next day (Saturday) because Bon Jovi were playing Milton Keynes Bowl and  had also requested them. lol

Actually, I remember the sound check very well. Incrementally and one by one the number fell apart, literally -  I looked round and the rest of the band had all stopped playing - agog - whilst the sound man and all the roadies were gawping into the balcony where Kathy Lloyd was performing a ****ing topless photo shoot.

If you like Spirit of Eden you might enjoy an album by Westerman called An Inbuilt Fault. One of my favourites from last year.

Appreciate your reply. Often when talking about Cat Stevens in his pomp people refer to Tea For The Tillerman which I also like but I opted for Teaser in my list

I don't think any of my top 5, or 10 songs come from my top 5 albums.
