1-2 Fulham, A Post Match Thread

At Fulham, City had six shots from inside the area, and Faes had three of them. Vestergaard and Ndidi had one each from a set-piece too, leaving just one effort from open play inside the 18-yard-area.

City had 45 per cent of the ball at Fulham compared to 30 per cent against Tottenham, but had fewer touches inside the final third and the opposition’s penalty area. If they’re not going to dominate the ball as they did last season, they have to be more efficient in attack.

Excluding set-pieces, they completed 11 passes and crosses into the penalty area in their opening match. At Fulham, they did it just twice.

But Cooper said he thought we could have picked up a result? 🙄

The way he overlooks Ricardo and Mavididi for inferior options are clear an obvious red flags.

Well it appears so, but - how often do we fans criticise managers - England managers in particular - for picking 11 "great" individuals (often because they would be hammered by the media for leaving out a teams star player if they lost) but not picking a team.

Successful managers pick teams, Pep regularly benches Foden and he's the player of the season!

Cooper sees what we clearly do not, Ric and Mav are two of my favourite players so I'd like to see them start too but we must trust the bloke to pick a team.

I thought the stats from the Soton v Forest game were jaw dropping, this nonsense of ball possession needs to be binned and fast, it means zero if - as is usually the case - teams do nothing in the box, like Soton.

There's always a segment that will push the button early. I have seen little positives so far and to me Cooper's not helping himself in the fans' eyes with how he speaks in public. I appreciate it's not an easy job or situation at the club, but where Maresca had a clear idea and authority, Cooper comes across as rather rudderless and contradictory. The way he overlooks Ricardo and Mavididi for inferior options are clear an obvious red flags.

This is it.

You can expect there to be a slow start, no one would suggest this isn’t a possibility…. But like you’ve alluded to, you expect to see some form of a plan, evidence of a system and a philosophy…. At the moment our approach can be described as a “birra this and a birra that”.

Wow, these are absolutely damning statistics. Cooperball really is horrific.

For one, we've watched Ricardo for years. We know his outstanding qualities and last year he doubled down by nailing his new role almost from day one. A new manager's dream you'd think - someone with the tactical flexibility and technical skills to fit practically anywhere on the pitch in any kind of system.

Mavididi has some very specific strengths, which he was able to show consistently all season. Now Reid is playing in this exact same position, but far less efficiently. It's a bizarre change and a baffling downgrade. Reid might be off form, but this makes the lack of change even less understandable.

We had enough weaknesses in the team going into the season - fixing what didn't need to be fixed is a great waste and judging by performances, has only made us worse.

Perplexing.
