3 games in, 1 point, overall assessment …

Yep. One mentality I absolutely despise is the one where people excuse dropping points because "it's early in the season". Are points less valuable at the start of the season? Are players and the manager being paid less at the start of the season? It's a loser mentality and the same people will be looking round at the end of the season when we get relegated by a point or two wondering what went wrong.

We cannot disregard facts because they don’t suit our idealised outcome unfortunately. Hoping for greater adventure after these two weeks!

We would be getting battered very frequently, so I agree, and as you said elsewhere, at the start of the season it was all doom and gloom about getting a pasting, and now we are not getting walloped, people are more unhappy?

What is sorry? Did 19 other teams get promoted too? Did 19 other teams have a managerial change in the summer? Do 19 other teams have PSR restrictions?

It's possible to recognise some of the real life factors that have affected the early part of our season without it being some sort of excuse or loser mentality. You're right to say that points matter just as much in any/every part of the season. But to expect us to be performing better now rather than later seems to ignore the reality of things

Every side in the division is evolving and integrating new players. New Villa signing scored for them Saturday and they won. New Fulham signing scored for them against us and they won. It's fine margins of course but they add up.

These clubs are just operating better than we are in general, hence their improvement in the last few years and our significant downturn.

It's the same mob and attitude from 22/23 isn't it. All over again, rinse and repeat.

It's gone from a lot of posters saying we are going to get slapped 4 or 5 nil in the opening games to now it's been a poor start because we lost narrowly to Villa and Spurs, two very much established teams with good coaches, esp Villa. If we stay up it will be about picking points off the bottom 10, and theres a great opportunity to do this after the next international break - so lets see how we sit then.

Agree to a point, though I wasn't one of those saying we'd be spanked if we stuck with Enzo-ball BUT there are ways of changing that system to be slightly more resilient that don't involved picking 3 DCM's and sticking everyone behind the ball, leaving your best winger on the bench etc etc. I think we can do better than planning on just picking points up from those close to us - If that's our only aim then it could backfire massively, you have to be a bit more ambitious than that IMO. Now that we have seen we aren't getting battered by the likes of Spurs and Villa AND we've clearly seen we play MUCH better when Mavididi and Bueno are on the pitch, after the international break Cooper will have zero excuses to pick a starting 11 similar to the one he has been.

"They're trying their best!"

"We'll be fine!"

"You're entitled!"

"We were in League one once!"

"Stop moaning!"

Etc etc

"That sort of attitude from the fans is why we where we are"

"This manager is the problem"

"Fans make it like a library"

"Last week we were in the Champions League"

"Your support is the problem"

"Sack the manager"

"Attack!"

You are right, same old , same old  lol

Effort of the team is good,  signings have given us decent attacking options.

Set up not to lose is understandable but a 1-0 loss is still a loss. The team and specifically the team selection need to be more attack minded.

Ricardo benched is probably the weirdest decision.

Not sure who our best 11 actually is.

It'll be an interesting next few weeks.

As I've said, this is the 1st time in 15 years we've had a manager start fairly poorly to their tenure. That's got more weight currently because how how poor pre-season felt but whether we've been very fortunate or not since Sousa's distasterous spell here, every manager has got off to a good start.

The last time we were promoted, we played 2 of the top 6 in the opening 3 games and were sat on 2 points, we then won the next 2 (one of which was against another top 6 club). We then fell apart after that until April and the ridiculous great escape but we'll learn a lot in the next few games.

id point out that's when everton weren't shit as well, our opening 3 in 14/15 were against 5th, 3rd and 4th the season before

When he talks about not dropping levels when making subs it'd be interesting to know if he means dropping energy levels or quality levels.

You'd assume he means quality levels, because with subs you shouldn't be dropping energy levels at all. But with that said doesn't that kind of sound like you're hampering the starting 11 so have a stronger bench. Rather than fielding your strongest 11 and having a bigger drop when the subs roll on?

Reasons I'm feeling positive about the next batch of games.

1. Overall we seem to have made good signings. Buananotte looks class (shame only here for 1 season) and high hopes for El Khannouss. Ayew looking better than some predicted and even Okoli may prove good over time. Skipp looks like he'll be a regular. Hoping Eduoard could be the final piece of the forward line jigsaw.

2. Initial results were not great, but we competed in games we feared we'd be slaughtered in.

3. Cooper has some time now to coach the non-internationals

4. Mavididi looks competitive at this level.

Areas of concern

1. In one or two positions we are an injury away from dire straits. Hoping in particular Mads can stay fit all season.

2. N'Didi. Jury still out on whether he can still hack it at this level.

3. Full backs.

4. Cooper's inclination to play 3 defensive central midfielders.

5. How will our morale cope with a thrashing from Man City or Arsenal?

Pats on the back all round. Tweet from Fatawu saying we'll put it right in the next game and a day trip to Alton Towers:brendan:
