I'm keeping away from Palace when their playing anyone other than the really big teams. Become to hard to best under Pulis.

This is another thing Lamby could take into consideration.

Sometimes a team in the lower reaches of the table can have a combative manager (like a French or Portuguese version of Tony Pulis) who will get his team RIGHT up for the visit of a team above them in the table. He knows how to fire people up, to get his players in the faces of the supposedly better players and make life hard for them.

You hear the old cliche of certain grounds being a "tough place to go to"......How do you know that when picking that game in the French Ligue 2, Ukraine, The Chilean Premiership or who knows elsewhere, youve not stumbled on one of these managers, or one of these "tough places to go to" that opposition teams hate going to?

I did think this all through when I picked Stoke. I had 16 other correct selections, many of which were higher odds than the Stoke victory... I somehow convinced myself Stoke were exactly the sort of team Palace would really struggle against ie try to outfight and out-hustle them and come undone when matched on that front by superior players...

I've learnt a real lesson there  - but a miss is as good as a mile. The bookies win this round.

Im sorry for your loss mate, i was just using an illustration following on from Lamby's accumulator yesterday to show that relative league positions are only one part of the equation when picking the bet and researching it out.

Ive read your posts in the column here and you always come across as a sensible betting man, seeking out value and only acting upon it when youre convinced.

It was more using the situation today to give advice, rather than drawing attention to the fact people had lost out on stoke.

Your point is spot on mate. If you don't know or understand the market, I don't see how you can hope to pick out value. Picking out 'value' is the only real way to beat the bookies. The bookies employ a lot of people, but they sometimes themselves have to cover lots of individual markets. By exposing yourself (not like that Lamby) to enough sport and knowing enough about that individual market (lets say you want to specialise in 6f sprints at Lingfield?) then you can potentially give yourself an advantage over the bookie.

Picking blind and putting together accumulators based on a 'that's really short odds so should win' or 'they are doing well in the league' approach, is not going to yield profits long term.
