Let's have a films thread.

We watched Safe house a couple of nights ago and it was very enjoyable. Watched Get the Gringo last night and that was even more enjoyable - perhaps because I wasn't expecting it to be.

Bourne Legacy tonight.

Watch Killer Joe the other night. Ham acting, bad script, and tv movie directing. Friedkin should hand back his Oscar, so it can be melted down and poured into his open eye sockets whilst he sucks on a piece of fried chicken. How this has got praise in critics circles I don't know.

Finally got around to see Looper. Distracting make-up job, and several bad actors chewin on bad dialogue spoiled a good concept. But props for JGL for actually putting in the effort to act like Bruce Willis, unfortunately the fact that Bruce can't really act, so this defeated the purpose of playing him, made my head hurt.

Watched Cloud Atlas last night. Was enjoyable for most part and I was thoroughly surprised at how well it was made, given the mixed reviews.

It's always a toughie converting a book of this scale and putting this many characters and worlds into a 2 1/2 hour movie, Tykwer and the Wachowskis had to compress it all at one point. Surely fans of the book will be disappointed.

Thought the acting was pretty good (even though I'm not the biggest Tom Hanks and Halle Berry fan) and I think using the same actors multiple times was just meant as a help for the audience to figure out the connections between the characters and time periods itself.

At the end, I got the message about love/peace/tolerance after all.

7/10

Watched Chronicle yesterday. Great special effects. More plot device holes than you can throw a bus through

Also watched Men in Black 3. Wasn't as funny as it could have been. Bad guy was desperately underwritten and dialogue wasn't as sharp as the previous two films. I can see why it had production problems and had a few rewrites.

It's a really disturbing book.

Just when you thought films couldn't get any worse? Yes that's Status Quo starring in a fooking movie!

WHAT THE ****!!!!!!!

That raises so many questions!!!!

Who financed that? Who ****ing wrote that? How the **** did Jon Lovitz actually sink THAT low!? Who thought this would be a good idea? How do they plan to make ANY money back on this? Is this a money laundering scam?

Watched two films recently-Gran Torino which I thought was fantastic and embarrassingly, it was the first film that I saw Clint Eastwood in and he was immense in that film.

Watched Scott Pilgrim vs World which was very quirky yet very enjoyable. Eighties and Nineties kids would love the video games/ films references.

You're gonna look really silly come Oscars season.

The number of British financed films are exceptionally low. Usually it involves a rich dad, and a son with little talent wanting to 'make a movie'. This however is the baby of Stuart St. Paul. I took part in one of his movies, starring none other than Craig Fairbrass - Freight. It was financed by a very small amount of finance and everyone else taking part for no money upfront, and the a cut of the backend (dvd sales). As you've probably never heard of Freight, then you'll understand that I didn't get paid. I suspect with the cast and director that this will be of the same ilk. It'll be lucky to get to DVD from the shape of it.

btw - This promo looks as though it's been produced for one reason - to raise more cash. Distribution is a costly affair, and putting it on screens makes the money, and pushes the dvds into the shops. I suspect this will achieve neither.

Saw the Hunt (Jagten) last night, fantastic bit of performance cinema. Unfortunately had to see it at the old Panton Street Odeon which perhaps took something out of the cinematography (archaic screen) but none the less beautiful.

Mikkelsen is absolutely superb and the drama was very well understated but sharply real.

Well worth the watch, especially for anyone that only knows Mads as Le Chifre of Casino Royale.

The Hobbit is a 200 page children's book. That it's being made into a trilogy just reeks of commercialism, not sure how they're going to pad out the films. Of course there is lots of background material out there, but Tolkein decided no to put it into that particular story. That film-makers (or Jackson and his production company) don't realise that is beyond me. They could do other films using the Middle-Earth mythos without messing with The Hobbit.

I get a feeling it's going to lose a lot of it's innocence and charm. :(
